Default Email and Site Size Questions

1. I routinely receive mp3 and video files via email as a part of doing business. Some of these exceed 10mb in size, and they are not zipped. The way I read your email policy, these files would be disallowed based on size and on the fact they are not zipped - correct?

2. My current site has streaning video and audio files that also exceed 10 mb. Your policy seems to indicate that any single file that exceeds 10mb on a site is not allowed - is this also correct?

Thanks for your reply.

None of that is true. You can recieve and send emails larger than 10mb if you make a large enough mail box. There is a limit, depending on your server.

Files can be any size that you wish, provided they don't exceed the total size of your site. You are limited on how the files can be uploaded as they get larger, but ftp will always work.

HG staff don't monitor these forums very actively, so if you need fast answers you should send an email to sales@hostgator.com

Yes, max. email attachment size is 10MB.

As far as I know there is no limit like that, i.e. it does not matter how big the files you want to download are.

Not on all servers. They claim there is a 10mb limit on attachemnts, but I never actually encountered it.

Thanks. Does the attachment HAVE to be zipped, or does it matter?

The mail transfer doesn't require it to be zipped to transfer, but some email types are blocked if they are not zipped, normally those that can be run, like exe files and bat files. I ran into a problem, I can't send or receive mdb files that are not zipped.

So that answer is no, they don't have to be zipped, unless they are a type that must be zipped. I don't believe MP3, video or image files need to be zipped.

I was testing the size limit (attachments), and I was able to send a 15MB attachment, but 25MB failed. so probably it's 20MB or so in the server I am.

Hmmm... what do you mean HG staff don't monitor this forum very actively? if it's true it's rather strange, because if people asks questions, if people want to know more about HG hosting services, HG should /in my opinion/ reply very fast, don't you think?

Mostly, they do get replies. HG has several people who do read the forums on their behalf, but the forum isn't part of the support system, so if you have a true support or sales question, it is better to email them than to put up a question in the forum.

yeah, but when someone post topic here, s/he'll get answer faster (HG staff + you guys), and have opportunity to compare what HG staff is saying and what independent experts /Serra, queitFinn etc/ are saying about different problems, ideas

Yea, I wouldn't call myself an expert, but the replies do come quickly and often with a little more info than support provides, but HG customers should expect the forum to be the first line of support for problems or technical questions. Yes, it is great if they get an answer, but answers are not guarenteed.
