Default Email Accounts

On my hosting plan, baby croc, it shows that I have unlimited email accounts. Is it ok if I offer visitors to my site free @24fans.net email accounts?

Hey Eric...

you can offer free email, sure.

There is no set limit to how many email accounts you can set up.

BUT bear in mind that you have only a certain amount of disk space, a certain amount of processor, so much memory and such.

Let's say you gave away 1,000 free email accounts.

Now, let's say you have 5 gig of disk.

Now, let us imagine that each of the 1,000 email accounts stored 20 meg of data in their email account.

In this case you would have just used up 20 gig of disk so you would be in trouble. You would need to upgrade to a bigger storage or a bigger plan.

YOu can do this, give away email accounts, but maybe limit them to 5 meg of storage via cpanel, or something like that.

Good luck Eric.

I understand what you're saying. Maybe I could just offer it to be used with another email account via pop.

I just hope for you that you also don't give free email account to user who will use them to spam and get your site suspended. Just be careful and think about it a bit before offering it.

Best regards,

Hey Eric.... chaloupe has a very good (bad) point there.

Even when I sell hosting with email I have to watch the buggers carefully to ensure they don't spam and get my whole IP block blacklisted by the antispam nazis out there (SORBS, SPAMCOPS, NAZIS)

I guess you could do this as long as you monitored the server very well.

If you are on dedicated you can set the limit of email sent per hour by any given user. You could set that to 10, let the free email clients know it is set to 10.

That way it is a bit useless to spammers who need to send thousands per hour.

Not sure if reseller plans have that setting in whm though.

Anybody? Can resellers set the limits to how much email per account per hour?

Cheers-ah

THey are not Nazis
They do their job and they do not block anybody's e-mail. Other people (server admins) use their lists to blacklist. Also the way the lists are used can be very different... one can use the lists to add spam points to spamassassin rather then just block immediatly. I'm happy this antispam guys exist

I do not see that option, so I would say "we cannot". But Eric is on a non-reseller account so... even if that option existed.....

You can only set the number of email per hour(check & send) in the WHM 'root' access. There is two type of settings also. In WHM and you need to login as 'root' and go to WHM>Server Configuration>Tweak Settings>

- The maximum each domain can send out per hour(0 is unlimited).: 200(this is my server values, check with hostgator for your limits on your server)

- The number of times users are allowed to check their mail using pop3 per hour. Zero is unlimited: 60(this is my server values, check with hostgator for your limits on your server)

So you need to have your own dedicated box to change those values as reseller and shared server don't have access to those settings.

You also need to check the email policies on having a lot of email accounts on your account and what can happen.

Best regards,

My apologies to Forum, I got a bit hot-headed.

I should not have reffered to SpamCops or SORBS as "Nazis". That is not correct, fact conceded, apologies noted.

Nevertheless, I sincerely believe that they are most certainly over zealous in their endevour to protect us all from the evil spammers.

Please accept my extraction of "nazis", replace that with "nasties" please.

Cheers

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I think what I'll do is just give out maybe 25 or so emails, this should be a good promotion for the site seeing as 24 is over for the season so traffic is way down.

Maybe we should/could start another thread in the right area about spam.

It surely is a sensitive issue, isn't it?

Perhaps I'll post in the general discussion area regards this issue

Cheers
