Default Ecommerce site Suggestion

I am looking at creating a e-commerce site. I need people to be able to order and I need to be able to process debit/credit cards on line.

Any suggestions on how to get started?

Are the e-commerce add on in Fantastico worth trying? (CubeCart, OS Commerce, Zen Cart)

Does Site Builder have any useful templates?

As you can tell I am new to this but I think I can work with a template ok.

Thanks for any suggestions and/or advice.

No problem but you will need a dedicated IP if you are going to process credit cards.

I run a Zen Cart site for a small liquor store (www dot squirrelysliquor dot com.) I have been happy with it. Zen Cart has the option to send emails, create coupons, process cc and run paypal payments, and allows for the creation of new pages quickly. I don't run paypal due to the legal issues. The owners have enjoyed the ability to have a newsletter signup.

I would not install a thing from Fantastico, JMO. Go to the Zen Cart website to download the current version. This will force you to get intimate with Zen Cart and the layout of files. This is a good thing.

Not sure... but Zen Cart has some templates. Plus you can find additional free Zen Cart templates using google.

That is why I am sugesting a self install of Zen Cart as that will allow you to become familiar with the layout of files, the use of templates, modifications and the page override system. The Zen Cart website and forum is very useful.

I was new to having an online shopping cart to process my credit card/paypal orders and was recommended here about a year ago to use Cube Cart, which is an auto install in fantastico and also has/had some templates, and all I can say is...THANKYOU VERY MUCH FOR RECOMMENDING ME THIS PROGRAMME!!! For me CubeCart was/is very simple to manage and has never given me any problems to this day, fingers crossed!

You will also need a SSL certificate.

Thanks everyone for the input. I see I need a few items such as dedicated IP and SSL.

I did go a head and install Zen Cart using Fantastico. Editing the template is not going to good. I can not seem to find where to change things. But in time I hope to get everything I need done.

I like Mageneto E-commerce platform I've tried Oscommerce I like it but still not happy with certain aspects like the templates and backend feel.

I use Payquake or(Authorize.net) and get some great rates. To Process all the credit card, Check transactions.

Using Zen Cart. Were able to "tame" it but it wasn't easy.

OTOH, Magento requires lots of server resources (not suitable for shared web hosting).

I have used Zen Cart on several sites through several releases of Zen Cart. They have great forums and a lot of support. It is a little difficult to get around at first if you want to create a lot of customization, but everything you could possibly want is there. There is so much that Zen Cart can do, don't expect to upload, set up a database and open your store in an hour. It is, however, worth the time.

I have three suggestions about Zen Cart.
  1. Do NOT use fantastico to install, or you will be very nervous at upgrade time (not to mention your upgrades may need to wait for fantastico's update.)
  2. Follow all security recommendations.
  3. Check out all of their add-in modules on the zen cart website. Some are quite helpful to the business.

This thread is now both old and in the wrong category (well, it was started in the wrong category). Unfortunately, the interesting insights here may not be seen by members who aren't looking to pay someone.

Could the next person tempted to revive it and post please find one of the other e-commerce threads in the web hosting or off-topic categories?

Magento does work on a shared or reseller server here at HG.
