Things seems to be calmed down again, but I would like to know the reason why the load got up so high. My case # is HGSupport #CIL-69236-647. So if any of you GatorBen, Stef, etc could find out I would sincerely appreciate it. This is the 2nd time in like 7 days this has happened.

Ok, in this case a user had a CGI program running that was either badly written or doing something illegal, it was using a ton of processes and possibly looping. It drove the load up until we suspended that user and killed it.

This is something that happens fairly often on newer servers, usually we catch it quick enough so you don't notice. A user will join or use a program that has a bug, is for spamming, or just uses too much cpu and so on. We see it, suspend it and kick the user. Usually we get it before load causes problems but rarely we will miss it and not see it until it is a serious problem and we have to reboot the server or shut down a few things while we fix it. For example earlier on a server I caught someone testing a buggy script they wrote that was driving load up to around 15, we suspended the site and so on.

Let me know if you have any questions,
Thanks, Ben

Smile Re: Eclipse Server Issues....AGAIN

Hey many many thanks for the reply. I know tons of things can happen on servers that can cause issues, but outtages are easier to handle when I get a specific reason that caused it instead of "there was an issue with one of the services and it was restarted" from support@hostgator.com

BTW, the server load is back up to 17.97 as of 3:48 PM Est Nov 2

Thanks Again!
Quinn
