Default E-mail filters settings question

We would like to know if we were to have the dns setup for email to forward to our local exchange server if the incoming e-mails hit your spam and virus filters first? Our current host does this and we want to ensure our future host can do the same.

Are you filters in place to that emails get checked for spam and viruses before they hit us if we forward the emails to our exchange? Thank You

I haven't replied to this yet because I am not too sure, but I believe if you change the MX record to another server it never actually hits our email server. I could be wrong so it would be best if you emailed support@hostgator.com with your question.

As for the filters, we filter out file extensions such as .exe, .bat, etc. But we do not scan for viruses. Spam can be checked for using spam assassin.

You are correct, the MX record redirects the site to the exchange server. The data doesn't go to HG at all, it just goes right to the echange server.

To get the data to go through spam catchers at HG you would need to make a catch-all box on the domain and then forward the mail to the exchange server. The exchange server would then sort to the mail to the respective accounts. I haven't seen this done in a while, so I don't know if it is still being done. At one time, it was possible to do that.
