I am currently hosted with Godaddy, but in search of another host that has this ability. Godaddy's security setting is medium which prevents you from being able to dynamically create a new folder on the FTP. Does HG allow this?
What I want to be able to do is when a user signs up on my site, upon sign up the code behind automatically creates a new folder for that user on the FTP and names it dynamically to store that users info/setttings etc. Is this possible on HG? Thanks in advance |

You could do it with php. It wouldn't be too hard to create a new directory. The problem would be giving them a username/password automatically to access it.

what exactlyl do you mean by "create a folder for that user on the ftp?"
does the new user need an actual ftp account or ftp access to the site for their own folder? or do you just need to create a folder when you have a user signup with specific info placed in it? the second would be easier than the first. and it would be done with php tied into the user signup process for whatever CMS solution you're using.

The directory would be created to store specific info for that user. They would not have FTP access, the folder would only be accessed by code behind when pulling that users info. This is exactly what I need to do dix "or do you just need to create a folder when you have a user signup with specific info placed in it?"
I have/am creating everything in C# and have the code already written to do this, it was just a matter of ensuring HG's servers don't have a security level that doesn't permit this kind of dynamic FTP access. And as far as the username/password, this would only be to access website info and not the FTP. Having everything written in C# rather than PHP won't be an issue will it? Thanks for the help. As far as service and help goes I already see how HG excels in this. |

They have a money back guarantee. You could purchase an account, test it, and if it won't work ask for a refund.
I doubt you'll find a better host than HG to do this on. If you jump on one that will allow a super low security level, you'd have to ask yourself if you really want to be there. There might be other ways to accomplish what you're trying to do. |

You would need a Windows server to run your compiled C# code, which is not available at the moment. http://www.hostgator.com/windows-hosting.shtml
A Windows dedicated server should work, if your budget allows for the higher cost. http://www.hostgator.com/windows-ded...-servers.shtml You could port it over to PHP, but that is probably not what you want to do. You should contact sales or use live chat to find out about the availability of a shared Windows server. |

in terms of security, i can't tell you squat about windows servers and i've never run C on a server myself, but i can say the process is quite doable on a linux server with php. you'd need to chmod your writable directory to 755 to allow write access, if you end up going that route.

This is a bummer. I didn't even think about Linux and c# not being compatible. Unfortunately, I do not know PHP so c# is my only option. I did contact sales about shared Windows and their best estimate was it will be available in the next 6 months.
As for the dedicated, I would need that eventually, but I don't think I can work my budget to be able to put down roughly $2k/year for hosting currently. I am gonna have to think about this. It seems the only option I have (atleast to stick with HG rather then other hosting which obviously would be lower quality), is to go dedicated. Thanks for all the input and help thus far. It is greatly appreciated. |
