download counting for dummies? :)

Hi.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, I hope it is.

I run a site based on the pc game Morrowind, my site offers mods for the game and I would like my site to count how many times each mod (zip file from 2k to 1mb) has been downloaded.

I 'think' this needs some fancy script or php or mysql (tbh I don't know squat about advanced things like that)

Does anyone know of a guide for idiots or a simple faq about setting such a thing up?
