Default Dovecot Migrations

Hello,

** UPDATE 3/24/2011 **
We will be updating the servers listed below on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Unfortunately we will be turning off access to the POP3 server during the migration. This will automatically re-enable after the migration has ended. For most of you, this will cause maybe a 5-10 minute gap in POP3 accessibility, however we are expecting some migrations to take up to 30 minutes, so during this time you will have no access to your POP3 server. This will not affect IMAP users.

Please note, that this will not affect incoming emails. Emails will still be accepted by the server, you just will not be able to retrieve them until the migration has completed.

Benefits of Dovecot
Low memory footprint.
Highly configurable.
Better IMAP performance.
BlackBerry® Fastmail support.

* Old Issue. The following should be resolved and not happening in the current migrations (3/15-3/18). If you are seeing problems however, please contact support and we will get them squared away.
Quote:
Unfortunately clients that were configured to "Keep Mail on the Server" and were using POP3 may see an issue with older mail being marked as new. This would cause the email client to download the old email again causing duplicates.

Users can download the emails again through their client, change over the email client to use IMAP, or our support team can remove older emails from the inbox. If you prefer to have the emails removed, please email support@hostgator.com with the email addresses affected and the date ranges of the emails to delete.
Thank you for your patience!

Hello,

We will be updating the rest of our shared servers on Monday 2/20 and on Tuesday 2/21. The details are as follows:

Gator2 -> Gator399 will be done Monday evening, possibly starting around 9pm CDT.

Gator400 -> Gator799 will be done Tuesday evening, possibly starting around 9pm CDT.

Thanks for your continued patience during this time.

Question Re: Dovecot Migrations

Is this also planned to be done to the reseller servers at some time as well?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

We are, yes, however we will be waiting until the rest of our shared servers are done before we start on the reseller migrations. We want to be totally sure that there won't be any weird issues with the migrations.

We'll update this thread once we set a date.

Would this migration have anything to do with my site's excessive down time?

Hi UncleMike,

These migrations would not cause this. Are you having downtime on your sites? Do you have an open ticket about this? I'd like to look into it ASAP.

Hello,

We will be migrating Courier to Dovecot tonight on the 100 reseller servers below.

We will migrate the rest of the reseller servers in batches over the next two nights. We will update this ticket accordingly.

Thank you for your patience!

Question Re: Dovecot Migrations

Will the reseller servers begin their conversions at 21:00 CDT as well?
Any chance we can get a little more lead time on the notices for reseller servers? The day before (24+ hours) would likely be sufficient lead time for most.

Mike,

This will be actually around 22:30CDT tonight, my sincerest apologies for not putting that in my original post.

Please go ahead and take this post as a notice that for you, your customers and the rest of our customers that are currently on a reseller server, there might be brief outages of POP3 access during the evening hours of the CDT Time zone tonight, Wednesday night and Thursday night.

Howdy,

would today's migration include the 'rollsroyce' server as well?

We have clients that would want to utilise the BlackBerry FastMail Service which Dovecot support.

Cheers!

Reseller account here (avanti). Did this move generate duplicate emails to be received by clients of previously received email? Getting reports.

Edit: NM.

I can see some script also available for migration which allows smooth migration which will not result old message to be downloaded again

http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/Courier

Is hostgator Admin not using this script to migrate

Hello,

No, rollsroyce is not affected by this migration at this time. We will post when we are migrating that server.

Hi KC,

I apologize for the inconveniences and the frustrations. This was due to a port no being shut off correctly. This has been fixed and shouldn't happen anymore.

Hi,

Yes, we are using this script, however it's not just as simple as using this script that doesn't cause these issues. There is no way to stop these duplicate emails from happening, however the migration script actually fixes those duplicate emails as it's migrating. This is why we are shutting off POP3 access during that time, so duplicate emails will not be generated.

i

Is this migration is taking place because IMAP Daemon hangs many time due to this Email client ask passwords again and again

Also in squirrel mail/round cube we get error ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.

Is this problem will get resolved/ rectified after migrating to Dovecot?

Deepak Mhatre
