Question Domains/Sub-Domains/Parked Domains

I'm currently on an extreme learning curve so bear with me, please. I want to have two different websites with two different domain names (ie www.domain1.com and www.domain2.com ). Am I correct in assuming that I first have to purchase the second domain name? After that I can "link" it (somehow) to my HG hosting, correct? And that would happen by creating a . . . what? Sub-domain, parked domain, what? This is where I get lost. Maybe someone could explain to me different scenarios useful for using the different types of domains. Hope I don't sound completely clueless!!!

Thanks again, Evan. Could u possibly give me examples for ways that someone would use sub-domains, add-on domains and parked domains?

Sorry, I deleted the old one because I didn't like the "Edited By" part. Here is the old message.

You are correct, you have to buy domain2 first. Then you must set it up as an addon domain.

Please read these first.

Subdomains are normally used for things like forums (you are at a subdomain right now, fourms.hostgator.com), for support departments etc.

Addon domains are used by people who want to have multiple websites on the same account.

OK, so if I want to have, for instance, a message board or chat on my site they would be contained in sub-domains? If so, is that sub-domain created when I "create" a message board or chat in cpanel?

Also, how is a "parked" domain used?

Thanks so much for your help

Your chat program or message board does not have to be a subdomain. It can if you want it to be though. To make a subdomain you must go to the "Subdomains" icon in cPanel. Then when you are installing a message board in Fantastico it should help you select the subdomain you wish to use.
