Domain validated vs. Company validated

What's the different between domain validated SSL and company validated ssl? , if I purchase an SSL can I have it installed on a sub-domain name? Is there a limit on the number of subdomains if an SSL is going to be used? thanks

It relates to the level of validation that the SSL cert seller does and then certifies to users of your SSL cert.

Unless you have a wildcard SSL certificate the certificate works only for the subdomain (or actually hostname) it is installed for.
If the certificate is installed for subdomain1.domain.com it does not work in subdomain2.domain.com.
