Domain URL for my forum

Lets suppose i own a domain name called http://MyDomainName.com/. I added FORUM feature to it. Now when the user clicks on FORUMS, the url it shows is http://MyDomainName.com/forums. But i want it to be shown as http://forums.MyDomainName.com/. Do i need to register a separate domain like http://forums.MyDomainName.com/ for that or is there something i can handle with the same domain?

In cpanel you need to setup a subdomain. Ensure that you let cpanel create that directory for you.

Set up a sub domain called forums

Once you have done this install your forum into that sub domain

You will need to delete the directory you previously created at /forums and only then cpanel will allow you to create a subdomain. Once you create the subdomain, there will be a new directory under /forums were you will need to reinstall the forum.

Know one seems to have answered the OP's question correctly.

By posting this question in 'Pre-sales' I'm assuming the OP does not have access to cPanel yet and going by the wording the OP has limited knowledge of how domains work.

In answer to your question OP, No you do not need to purchase any other domains to use forums.domainname.com <-- this is known as a sub-domain and can be quickly and easily set up using cPanel as other posters have said.

Thanks a lot. The links were very informative. One other question i have related to this. Between www.domainname.com/forums and forums.domainname.com, i was told that forums.domainname.com carries more weight in SEO point. Is that correct?

Although I'm not entirely sure on that one, I would not think the difference wouldn't be anything to worry about.

Your best option would be to contact Host Gator live chat (by clicking the icon in the top right of the screen) and asking them.

If we talks SEO. Yes, forums.domainname.com is more affecitive than www.domainname.com/forums

forums.yourdomain.com will have a different page rank than yourdomain.com.

Meaning google will see your forum as a separate site & rank it all by itself. while your site yourdomain.com will be ranked for its own content.

Personally I would join both & get a better PR than have different PRs for the site & for the forum.

if you have created the forum folder already & installed the script, you don't have to delete it to add the subdomain. just rename the directory to forum1, create the sub domain which will automatically create the sub directory, move all the content from forum1 sub directory to automatically created sub directory & edit the configurations to read http://forum.domain.com instead of http://domain.com/forum

You don't have to move anything, when you have created the subdomain, just delete the automaticalle created folder and rename forum1 ==> forum.
