Question Domain Registrars

What company do you buy your domains from (other than eNom) to resell to your clients? Why do you use them?

Hah, I was going to post a similar question eventually. Anyone have opinions of registrars regardless of whether or not you plan to resell?

I've been with GoDaddy for a while but ran in to _horrible_ customer service when I registered a DE TLD domain. It've been in an ongoning support issue with them for almost a month now.

Hi Forum. Godaddy, like Google, are Evil (imho)

I have used www.namesecure.com for years, they are very good as a registrar (forget their web hosting offer, it is hopeless).

I pay them only 6.95 per domain reg. No money up front. I get an excellent domain name mangement interface. But they have no API I am aware of so it is a "manual" job when I set up a new domain name but it takes me about 2 minutes - so no worries mate!

namesecure have really helped me a lot when i try to transfer a domain and the loosing registrar causes problems. Godaddy is very bad in that, you try to transfer a domain away from them or their more-than-evil cousings, NetworkSolutions.

Namesecure rules - if you don't mind manually setting up each new domain reg.

cheers

Kimbot, when you transfer a domain to them does that auto-register it for a year with them? Like, does it include a one year domain registration?

From http://www.namesecure.com/pages/domain-transfer.jhtml

Quote:
Transfers are only $7.49* per domain and include an extra registration year for free.
Quote:
With each registration, we give you all the remaining time on your existing term PLUS an additional year FREE.

You can also choose to add up to 9 additional years for as low as $6.95*/year.

That's a ton of value at a great, low price!
So, if I'm understanding that correctly, the transfer costs $7.49 + ICANN and you get however many months are left on your current registration period for "free" (since the $7.49 + ICANN accounts for the "free" year).

I use RegisterFly.com. They have weekly specials for transfers as low as $4.99 (includes extra year), and domain registrations as low as $5.99 - $7.99. Their site is image intensive and tends to be a bit slow, but they're launching a new site this week or next.

Prices are great, service is great, and it's easy to do everything you want/need to do.

I plan on transferring ALL of my domains over to namesecure.com within the next week. I'm going to do one for the first time to make sure it turns out good. If you have something against namesecure.com please say so now.

Kimbot:
Did you know that NameSecure IS NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC?

I am worried about transferring to them now, what if I don't like them and want to leave? Will they ignore my transfer request?

Use networksolutions. They have always been good to me when I needed tech support. Any DNS edits I do seems to be active within two hours. Too bad half the other DNS take "forever" to catch up to the change.

I guess it depends on what the experience has been. Just like here with HostGator; some of us think they're great, other's have had a bad experience and post accordingly. Dunno.

Well, I think I am going to hold off for a little while. I emailed a question to their support team, I am checking out what their response time will be. I will be sure to keep them in mind, they have great prices.

Follow Up:

esl: yes, when you transfer a domain to namesecure the transfer fee includes one year registration.

esl: "NameSecure IS NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC?" wow, I find that hard to believe. networksolutions have such a BAD reputation in the business, perhaps the worst. And yet namesecure have a good name. I will investigate this, seems odd but benefit of the doubt to you esl.

Oh shit, confirm on that, networksolutions DOES own namesecure. Really weird. I have dealt with both companies for year. ns sucks, namesecure is cool, but you are right, it is the same bloody company! Damn, damn, damn, the Evil Empire got me again by subterfuge!

francis: registerfly sounds good, I will check them out. these threads can change your life, eh?

esl: I have transferred domains back OUT of namesecure for clients and it only took a few mintutes to do the process because I was in control of dns via namesecure and just confirmed the transfer to new registrar and it went thru in a single day.

generally: sure looks like opinion rules the roost. just goes to show that each persons experience of a given event or object is different, very subjective eh?

good chat anyway.... opened my eyes a lot too, namesecure IS networksolutions... damn, damn, damn, I am sleeping with the enemy then

I don't know, I am still thinking about moving over to them.... is there any way that they could keep my domain and not let me transfer away?

Hi ESL.

Under ICANN rules the loosing registrar MUST let go of the domain name if all "paperwork" is in order.

Networksolutions had a bad rep in that department. Namesecure has never given me problems when I've moved domains out.

Mind you, I have rather a lot of domains registered with them so that may make a small difference in the way they treat me - or maybe not.

cheers esl

I am a directi reseller. It takes more money to get started in the begining but the domain names are cheaper. We are slowly setting up our own brand.

We sell domains at $7.75, we can go cheaper if you will be registering more then 10 domains.

Also, I am able to create sub-resellers, this will give you lower prices from the get go then you would normally get directly from directi.

NameSecure being owned by Network Solutions is interesting.

I always wondered how long Network Solutions would be able to keep selling names at such a high price competing with goDaddy and others, but maybe this answers my question.

Maybe they figure that by the time people catch on and Network Solutions starts to really lose business they will merge the two companies and announce a huge price reduction for their Network Soultions customers (when they renew of course).

I've been using goDaddy for a while now and haven't had any problems, but I haven't tried transfering away from them.

I have transfered nearly a hundred of domains for my clients from various registrars. Many from godaddy.com. godaddy seems to delay the process more then others however never any real issue to speak of.

I chose not to move them because as I started researching some of the suggested businesses I found that their reputations were not all that great... I am happy with the one I have now but am always on the look out for a better, cheaper one.

I have been reselling domain names through Dotster.com since I started business. Not quite the best rates in the world, but I've never had a problem with them. And as a plus they are local to me, just up the road a couple miles, so if I do have problems I know where to go.
