I've to say, HostGator is by far the best Hosting Company I ever found. However, a important part of the hosting bussiness is still missing: their own Domain Registrar. I've been waiting for it's launch for a very long time.
I've some domain names that will be expiring soon at my current registrar (my current registrar is my old hosting company) and they charge me too high for the domain renew (prices increase every year). I want to move my domains but I don't want to have to move them again when HostGator's registrar comes out. Those domains are about to expire in Jan, 2012. Is there any chances the new registrar comes out before that? Can someone from the staff give me a feedback on that matter? If there's no release date yet, can we at least know more about the possible features and the registration and privacy prices? Thanks! |

From what's been said about it before, the launch date is always x + 3 months, where x is today.

Well, I guess I'll have to look for another registrar then.
That's disappointing.

This is a third party service provided by Enom.
I'm talking about their own registrar. |

Registering domains is part of hosting business, but being an Accredited Domain Registrar is not.

Part of the problem is that eNom is a bit overpriced. There have been promises that when HG is acting as its own registrar, there would be better prices available, including not only the basic registration fee, but also for things like domain privacy.

Exactly, it's like EarlyOut said. I'm waiting for the new conditions and prices that will probably come with the new registrar launch.

I, too, am waiting for an announcement one way or another. Enom is far too expensive and cannot do .ca names online.

Honestly, I hope HG never does domain registering.
One stop shopping? It sounds nice, but look what happened with GoDaddy. I would rather HG continue growing and perfecting the hosting business. |

What happened with GoDaddy? They were hacked, and maybe some company from web hosting paid for this... This can happen to any web hosting company, nothing is 100% guaranteed in this domain. Regards, George B.

I have no idea what you're referring to, but...
They started out as just a domain registrar and became one of the best, if not the best. Then they added on hosting among other services. In my opinion they took on too much and became too big. Quality service from their support staff suffered and their hosting services were never something to brag about. How many stories have we read here? I would rather HG continue growing and perfecting the hosting business. |

I would agree with this from a customers perspective but it makes sense for HostGator to start their own registrar. In the end of the day they'll be making a much bigger return than using Enom.

Enom is way over-priced. Double for .ca names. Ridiculous.

I used Enom and i moved to Hostgator/Enom and got a better price. What Hostgator did "wrong" with this issue was announcing that they WOULD soon launch a Domain business but never did. I never register any new domains with Enom since they are slow and overprices and take my domains to Godaddy but i wish Hostgator would have the similar service as well
Learn from Apple and SJ they know how to make people wait for something and smack you in the head with it later when it arrives. |

Yes, it really is too bad that HostGator still doesn't have the domain registration service up and running.
They are missing a great opportunity with so many people transferring their domains away from GoDaddy due to the SOPA issue. http://venturebeat.com/2011/12/24/godaddy-domain-loss/ |
