Default Domain Redirect Masking

hello,
i don't know if this is possible with hostgator but i didn't see that option.
let's say i own domainA.com . now i want to redirect domainA.com to domainB.com but the address bar in the browser shall still show domainA.com .

is this already possible?

If you want the content of domainA and domainB to be the same you would just need to park one domain on the other in your cPanel. The address bar will show whatever domain is entered, there is no redirect needed. It would be more complicated if you already have set up domainB as an addon. We can provide more specific help if you provide more details on how you have the domains set up (and the domain names.)

the problem is, that i don't own domainB.com . so i only own domainA.com.
i saw that godaddy has this option included but i couldn't find it in cpanel on hostgator. it should just be a redirect but the url should stay the same.

Why would you be wanting to show someone elses website as your own?

I don't understand what you are trying to achieve. The user should always see the actual URL they are at.

Masking techniques are what some unscrupulous scammers use when setting up phishing sites.

no, see if you want to promote some others stuff you get a personal link.
when a user signs up via this link you get the comission.
but the links look quite ugly and many people think it's a scam, but it's only for tracking comissions.
now is this possible with hostgator or do i have to edit this on my domain registrar? i don't find this option anywhere but i know it exists on godaddy so perhaps it's here too.

I'm sure striddy knows what affiliate marketing is, and some of the amazing coding perpetrated in its name. What he was trying to say, delicately, is that many people think the opposite--it may be a scam when the URL doesn't change but the site switches.

There is at least one thread in the shared hosting category discussing the methods of doing this.

And yes, you would need to set up domain masking with the registrar if you insist on being able to do what you describe. The only similar options with HG accounts are parking as I described earlier. That requires you to own and operate both domains on the same server.

Yes, you load domainB to a frame.

Be sure to check with the affiliate program, as well--some don't allow iframes (or any other method), some have a minimum size required, some require it to be clearly labeled. (Apparently more people are worried about a scam if you keep the url than if you change it to the other domain.)

Hi

I have a network marketing business where I get a capture page included, and where I redirect a domain via Hostgator via a perm 302 redirect. However, I want the URL address in the bar to show MY website name which is hosted at Hostgator and not the capture page URL which is the external marketing company who hosts the capture page with my name across the end as an extension.

Is this possible? I've looked and tried to find a way of doing this in my hostgator account but haven't yet managed to do so.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks, Ania

Thanks quietFinn, I did actually read this thread and did not find the answer hence my post. I aim not to waste people's time with my questions if at all possible . I'm after a "how to do URL masking on HG" answer and to my reckoning it's not here in this thread. I've seen the reply about a frame but I have no idea what that is about. So no, not got the answer I need so far.

It means you need to create a frameset in your landing page.

Something like;

HTML Code:
<frameset cols="100%,*">
 <frame src="http://www.somedomain.com/" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" noresize scrolling="yes">
</frameset>

Thanks Fred, I'm probably not going to be able to do it this way as I don't own the landing page but the marketing company does.

Another way could be ... if I bought the domain through GoDaddy but am hosting on HG, could I do URL masking for MY domain from GoDaddy as I know they offer that? But possibly only if the hosting is done there too ... I tried this sort of but it didn't work, maybe cos I didn't do it right ...?

You should be able to forward a domain with masking from godaddy even if the domain is not hosted there.

I have a lot of domains with godaddy but no hosting and one of the domains is forwarded with masking without any problems.
The domain is question has no hosting account anywhere and "A" records and Nameservers" are pointing to the default godaddy servers.

Go to your domain manager in godaddy and select the domain.
Click on "Forward Domain"
Enter the target domain
Leave the box ticked for the DNS update
Click "Advanced Options"
Select "Forward with masking"
Update the 3 fields
Click "OK"
