Hello all! I plan on buying a domain from GoDaddy, so I'm not sure if these questions are relevant to HostGator or not:
Can I create a second www.__.com domain and have it point to a subfolder in my account, sort of like a subdomain would? Can I create a subdomain that points to a home computer of mine? It has a dynamic IP. What kind of restrictions are there on SSH? Can I use SSH/VI to edit my site? Thanks! -Kyle |

The answer to your first question: no 'pointing' necessary--the add-on domain feature in cPanel sets up the folder automatically for you, then for most practical purposes that directory is exactly like a separate domain. It can be used either as seconddomain.firstdomain.com or seconddomain.com.
Second and third questions: I'm pretty sure you could do redirects for a subdomain, if that's what you mean by 'pointing'. Not sure on the third, but you can edit your pages any way you want (are you talking about running a copy of VI on the host here?) |

1) This is called an add on domain. You must register this domain with the company of your choice, and then set it up via the add on domain manager in cPanel. It will auto create a folder in your public_html directory. 2) You are asking if you can point your subdomain to your computer that you wish to use as a server, correct? Now, I am pretty sure you could redirect it to an IP address, although I am not sure why you would want to do this. 3) I believe jailed SSH access is available on shared and reseller accounts and full SSH on dedicated servers. You should verify your questions by asking live chat support.

You don't have to do a redirect...you can change the subdomain's A record in the DNS zone to point to any IP you want.

I'm thinking of getting the Hatchling plan. It says "Domains Allowed: 1." So, even if I buy another domain from say, GoDaddy, I can't make it work on the same account?
Also, you said I can change the A record to point to any IP...how would I go about doing that for a dynamic IP? Thanks. |

The better way to handle this is to get dynamic dns service from dyndns.org. For something like $10/year, you get a domain from them--something like yourusername.OneOfTheirDomainsYouChoose.com--and put a little program on your computer. Whenever your IP changes it will automatically change where the domain you have points.

even with the updater to keep track of your ip....there are going to be times that its "behind" and you will not get to your home site. i would not rely on it for anything you really need or anything commercial. you might want to look at a static ip from your isp. even with static... if its (a)dsl, then even if your download speed is good, your upload speed will probably be much slower. your "upload" speed is what people are "downloading" from you..... this is fine for your own use but again, don't depend on it.
