Default Domain question

Hello.

I have a domain name over at enom.com and would like to transfer it over here. What would happen if I delete the domain name, and then sign up here and re-request it? Can I do that? I realize I can just point the domain to my site here at HG, but I really think I'd rather delete it and re-request it. Is there any reason I shouldn't do that?

Thanks!

I think Hostgator uses enom, if true, your domain name will still be at enom. Just point to Hostgator's nameservers.

Yes, but if I delete the name I won't have to pay enom's transfer fee, which is more than it would cost me to re-register the name here at HG. -Kim

There's no transfer fee to switch your dns. You're not transferring, you're just leaving the domain as-is at eNom and changing some settings on it (Up & has another thread on the matter, so i'm familiar with the situation...)

Also, FYI, when you want to transfer a domain name you don't do it by deleting the domain-- you just go to your new registrar and request the transfer. Your new registrar will take a couple days and then grab it from your old registrar. There's no fee to transfer a domain from or to eNom. This is their policy because ICANN doesn't allow fees for transferring domains away.

From eNom's website, anyway:

No, we do not charge you to move away from us.
As I said though-- for now, just leave your domain name and eNom and change the nameservers, which we'll tell you how to do in the other thread. It's easy, free, and much faster.

absolutely, besides.... to be more clear, "deleting" and re-requesting is not an option at all, you registered it for (at least) a year. you own it. Enom is the registrar.... hosting is seperate. you can move your domain registration to another registrar... there is no transfer fee but you usually wind up paying for another year of registration at the new registrar. you dont lose anything, it just extends you renewal. you should stay at enom for now..... just point your dns to HG.

Kim,

In your other thread I gave you an analogy that may help understand the difference between registering and hosting.

I understand what all of you are saying. I know I can just point the name to the new host, which will be HG (I'm waiting until my website is finished to sign up).

The thing is, I don't want to leave the domain with eNom as the registrar. Their website is extremely difficult for me to navigate and understand. Also, I read that they hijack names when you try to transfer them or if you let them expire. I know this could probably happen anywhere, and maybe it wouldn't happen to me, but I don't want to take the chance. But really I'm just so frustrated with their website that I just want completely OUT!!!

I got my domain EPP today. I signed up on Dec. 17, '06, so in just a few days I will have passed the 60 day requirement for transfering a domain to another registrar.

I realize I will have to pay for another year, on top of what I already have. That's ok. My domain name is also my business name and it's not going to be changing any time soon. Besides, it isn't that expensive to register it for another year, and some companies offer the ID protection from whois as part of the deal. Everything at eNom costs extra.

Those are my reasons for wanting to take my domain completely out of eNom. I don't care if it takes a few days longer. I don't have a website yet so it's no big deal. My website was supposed to be done by the end of January, but at the rate my designer is going I'll be lucky if it is done by the 1st of March. I've got time.

If you want to have an easy control panel for your domain, please feel free to try and test the one at HostnDomains.com.

Just enter into the site, click on MY ACCOUNT and then enter into SETUP A NEW ACCOUNT, then you can test options before buying or transfering a domain name or service, if you have any problem at all you can contact me and I will help you or you can call support where they can help you out.

Regards.

Thanks, Sergio. I'll take a look at the website. I'm currently looking at all the registrars listed with ICANN, and making a list of those I like best. Then, I'll choose from that list based on reviews I find and read.
