Hello...I searched around the forums and your knowledge base and could not find an answer to my question regarding domain name transfer.
If I transfer my domain to Host Gator, will Host Gator assume responsibility for maintaining the domain and keeping it renewed, or is it the responsibility of the client? Thanks! |

It is the client's responsibility. If you set it up for auto-renewal it will bill you automatically when it is time to renew. You should also receive emails before the domain expires letting you know it is up for renewal and advising you to be sure your credit card is up to date in the database.

2 of my websites recently disappeared as I was unaware they were due for renewal. I did NOT receive any email about this. Also, there is NO provision within cpanel to set an add on domain for auto renewal ... add on domains do not even appear in the domain management section even when you bought the domain from Hostgator!
Following a lengthy chat with support I was advised to email sales to set up auto renewal. The domain management/renewal system leaves a lot to be desired. |

I have not seen a reason to bring a domain over to HG.
Mine are all at Godaddy. Just setting DNS does what is needed. Even so, the core business of Web Hosting makes all others pale IMHO. Have a problem? Put a ticket in and it just gets fixed! Don't discard an idea thinking "HG won't do that!" They have proven to exceed my expectations over and over.

Also, here's a clarification for any newbie who's gotten confused about this. Registering your domain is different from hosting it. You can do the first at any domain registrar, including Hostgator, then open a hosting account here. As usa2k says, all you have to do if you use another registrar is convey the two nameservers that HG tells you about in your hosting welcome email. And as Rick said, transferring hosting is different from transferring domain registration. If you do use Hostgator as a domain registrar, you will get separate information about this. Many, many people get confused by this at first.
