Thanks so much!
I've been with 1and1 for years and never bothered to use or learn what the public_html folder was for ![]() I just pointed all domains to their respective folder in the root...seemed to work fine with 1and1 - Although I didn't use any auto install scripts.. |

So there isn't a way to have an account at Hostgator without a main domain because of Cpanel?
For example at Dreamhost, there is no main account domain. All domains are listed as their folder name below root. They have one button installs for Wordpress etc. but don't use Fantastico. It would be so much easier if one could the same here. We are often having clients decide they want to let their top level domain lapse but want to keep ones below. Well, you know how hard it is to explain to them options and what we need to do to remedy this at Gator... Cheers |

Jaca, you can set any domain on the cPanels, so thus you could possibly make your primary domain "mydummydomain.com" and then add all your "real" domains as addon domains. HostGator allows you to change your primary domain to just about anything you need, even if it isn't registered.
If you are needing to change your primary domain then I would suggest these things: 1) Copy your website for your primary domain into a folder in which you want the domain to point to. 2) Then login to your billing, I believe it's "View Hosting Packages". There will be a link that says change my domain. Click it and change it to something arbitrary, it doesn't have to be registered. Note that once you do this the changes take effect immediately, I know from experience. 3) Go back to your cPanel and add your original primary domain as an addon domain and make sure to change the directory it points to so that it points to the folder you created earlier. This will cause no real primary domain to be used, but have all your domains still hosted all under one cPanel. Hope this helps. |

This is great info. I just want to confirm that this will not "harm" anything?
Especially billing or say support not being able to identify your account (if you don't have a "real" domain name associated with your main account?) Thought. BTW if this is confirmed good, I vote for a sticky on this solution!!! |

If it's possible I'd like to have a multisite drupal 7 installation and us a non-registered primary domain "d7.com which would hold the drupal core files, and then have my real domains as addon domains. Could you elaborate a little more about how I would login to d7.com if it's not registered? And/or is it easier to use a registered domain as a place to hold core drupal? To be perfectly honest I'm still having a little trouble understanding the logic of how I should be organizing my multisite drupal install. I'll start another post to elaborate on my confusion. |

Thanks for the clarification. Looking over this thread there's a link to a Document Root Changes support portal that is fairly easy to follow, and links to some instructions on Apache mod_rewrite so that I can get my URLs showing up like I want writing some code to the .htaccess file.
