Talking Do you Really Report SPAM

Getting frustrated with my Open support ticket List getting Large with 99% viagra, those offers about ..... bulls**t, whatever they have.

Also found few nearby firms sending me 8MB attachments for promoting their website, never asked for it, didn't even knew the damn domain name, and was marked to my sales ticket then a few hours later to my support ID, PAINFUL.

must be some spidered SPAM DB giving them all those info.

So i created myself an account at http://www.spamcop.net
and started reporting a few everyday.
My best reporting time shown is 2 hours.

Does anybody else here do such a public service.

for your time.

I've never reported a spam in my life. What's the point?

Whilst your intentions are very honorable, you are wasting your time. With the billions of spam emails sent globally everyday, there is no way you can keep up with it. The spammers send to millions of addresses automatically, but you are trying to add manually.

If I reported all the spam I see, it would be a full time job.

Better to spend time learning how to defend yourself from it instead.

Very wise words from David there

You really are better of putting your time and effort into measures that stop you from being spammed in the first place.

Yups, but manually reported ones are Included in RBL's Promptly.

If everybody starts thinking like you, There would be more spam and no one to take a moment out.

It certainly helps if you mail or let a RBL controllers mail abuse@: addressess of good providers, through a reporting system with evidence.

Very true. Another way to help, effortless, is to contribute sites and email addresses to the spamtrap effort.

So what are you saying?

That I should not protect myself from being spammed so that I can then report any spam that I do get?

I am sorry but your thinking is way off base there.

If people, like me, take good measures to protect ourselves from receiving spam in the first place then it follows surely that it becomes a less lucrative affair for the spammer and as such spam is decreased.

You way of doing things, not taking all reasonable measures to protect your self from spam, in my opinion would have totally the opposite effect and would in fact increase spam and not decrease it.

Give a spammer a yard to play in then play in it they will, however if you build high walls and fences around that yard spammers will not be able to get into play.

I am unlucky if I get more than 6 spam messages a month and if I do get the odd spam message the anti spam measures I have in place will take care of it and report it to all major spam data basses at a click of a button.

I think--and hope--ghpk was urging both mitigation AND reporting, which is exactly what you are doing. ghpk may not have realized from your first post that your prevention software also reports.

Time for the group hug?

So is my 11.5 year old dog, particularly from small children--they've always treated him like a rock star, and he accepts their admiration as his due.

Perhaps in a separate thread in the shared hosting category, you might outline your very successful spam prevention technique--I'm betting that ghpk's plaint arose from frustration.

i like the idea of helping with the spam, but haven't started directly with spamcop and the like because it becomes just another thing for me to figure out, learn and deal with. so like many things, it's on my mental "to do" list.

i do use akismet in my wp blog, so i can feel like i'm contributing to the efforts there, and of course modsec on my dedi, mailscanner etc. to help miminzme it's impact on myself and my clients...

spam is a big problem and the more ways we can make it less so, the better.

Problem with Spamcop is many domains are reported but are being spoofed in e-mails and it's not where the e-mail really came from.

Your domain could be reported there and you never sent one piece of spam. It's worthless since they don't find out if it's coming from a spoofed e-mail address or not.
