How do I add a forum? (phpbb3)

I usually use Fantastico De Luxe for all my needs, but I would like to get the new phpbb3 forum, and I'm not sure how to do it.

Since phpbb3 is not supported by Fantastico, you would need to install the script manually.

Go to the official phpbb3 site, download the file as a .zip, extract it to your harddrive and follow the directions.

They probably include these steps:
create the database
modify a config file or two
FTP upload the files to your server
run a script
start customizing

I'm not personally familiar with phpbb3, but these are common steps for ANY script installation.

If you follow directions, it should take no more than 30-60 minutes to get to the customizing stage.

Another option, is I'm sure you could pay someone to do it for you.

It's fairly easy and straightforward. I installed one in about 5 mins just to check it out. It's great software, especially for the price.

Thats PhPBB2 He wants PhPBB3,
They are both excellent and both updated there just different styles,
I prefer PhPBB2 for its ACP and MCP

OK I am a total newbie to this and have recently gotten my backups from another server to run phpbb2.0 on this server. I wanted to upgrade them to the new version so that i can eleminate a lot of the spam issues that we have had in the past.

When i go to install phpbb3 i get to the Database configuration and have created a new database thru the mysql on cpanel and also a new username and password. When I try to install i get an error

Could not connect to the database, see error message below.
Access denied for user 'kevin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

I saw on another topic to modify the config.php file but on there is no data in the config file. I have redownloaded it several times. What the heck am i doing wrong other than trying this on my own.

DSN=localhostor domain.com? or something else

Did you actually assign the user privileges to access the database after making the user?

Also, the user name is going to be YourCpanelUsername_kevin, not just kevin. cPanel automatically adds your cpanel username and an underscore before the username. Same thing with the database name.

Thanks slap I figured out that I can edit the config file thru the file manager to corelate with the right database.

Dont edit your Config files just run the installation it will automatically set-up your forum.
Normally the install URL is www.domain.com/install/

The problem was the config file was empty. When I tried to run the install setting up the database would not work. Because the config file had nothing in it. I added the config file info for the database and all was fine. Only took about 17 hours but since I dont know jack about IT stuff or even running server I guess not so bad. Trial and error works sometimes.
