Default DNS - NS question

I've spent nearly all of the last two days looking for a suitable web hosting company and I think FINALLY I've found one that suits my needs. That is HostGator of course. I have just a couple of questions though.

I have several domains so I intend to buy a reseller package.

1. I assume if you install FrontPage extensions on one domain, it doesn't install it on all domains under your account. Is this correct?

2. All the web host I've looked at the last two days, except for one, imply you must change your DNS to use the web host's name servers. Whether it's branded or called Private Name Servers is immaterial to my question. For years I did DNS for my domains on a in-house server and one of my client's server. However I recently moved all my DNS to my domain registar DNS Service for better response times and better geographically dispersed. Is it mandatory to move DNS to HostGator just so you can host the web sites and why? Why can't I just make the DNS entries to point the internet to the IP address where my web sites will reside? This is what I have been doing in the past. Though I'vd done DNS for years, I don't claim to be an expert. I just fly by the seat of my pants usually. I'm happy with how my DNS is currently handled and really rather not change it.

Thanks!

Hi there,

nice to see HostGator suits your needs.

For your answers:

1. That's correct. FP Extensions can be installed per domain/subdomain.

2. At your registrar you will have to change the nameservers for your domain to the nameservers provided to you by HostGator at signup. The 'IP address where your websites will reside' is at HostGator, so that's indeed where you point your DNS to. If you signup as a reseller you can setup your own private nameservers (like ns1.yourdomain.com) and use those instead of HostGator's.

Let us know if you have any further questions,
Stef.

Hi, I just signed up for a reseller account for the company I work for. I have never managed a reseller account before, and was wondering the easiest way to create those private name servers. The master domain that I specified is with GoDaddy, so I am guessing that I will need to create them there. I am familar with changing DNS entries to point to different hosts, but have never created name server entries before. Am I correct that this needs to be handled at GoDaddy, or do I need to do something with the WHM to accomodate this? Thanks...

Justin,

Thanks for the note, I just registered and clicked on the link in the email that was sent, but guess I will have to wait until you can verify me before I can see the other boards. Thanks.
