Default DNS for my domain--which server does it know to use?

Okay, this might be a dumb question, but I currently have the Reseller Hosting account. My DNS is managed from the WHM, and not from the domain registrar. When I move all my accounts over to my new VPS account, how does my domain know which one to use? How does it know, "Okay, I am not pointing to his Reseller Account anymore, but I am now pointing to his VPS account." I know under the DNS Zone, I will have to update my private name servers to reflect the new IP Addresses, but I just don't know how my domain will know the difference.

Thanks again!!

If you are going to use the same private nameservers and move the accounts from the reseller account to the VPS then you will just need to make the changes to the nameserver domain. You will have to set up the nameservers on the VPS and then you will need to go to the registrar of the domain that the nameservers are based on and change the IP address for those. You would need to contact the registrar if you need help in where they need to be changed. You should have registered the IP addresses with your registrar when you set up the private nameservers on your reseller account.

When I log into hostgator.com/domains, it reads:

Domain Name Server 1: ns1.beucs.com
Domain Name Server 2: ns2.beucs.com

When I log into beucs.com/whm, and go to Edit DNS Zone for beucs.com, that is where I see the nameservers being managed. You are saying it should be modified on the registrar side, but it looks like it is being managed by my Web Host Manager.

There are two steps. The nameservers must be set up on the server with the A records set to the IP addresses for the nameservers. This is done in WHM. The nameservers also must be registered as nameservers with your registrar. I don't use the HG domain registrar so I am not sure how it is listed in the domai management. In GoDaddy there is a section to set up hosts using the domain where I have to set the I for NS1 and NS2.

You should be able to contact HG support and ask them and they can tell you what you would have to do.

You can also see more on using private nameservers by clicking on the Support tab above and enter Private Nameservers in the search box.

Those entries tell where the DNS of that domain is hosted.
If you want to host the DNS of that domain somewhere else you change the entries in the registrar to point elsewhere.

Since you purchased your domain name from Hostgator you will need to submit a ticket and have HostGator change the IP addresses the new IP addresses you were given when you set up your VPS.

I'm not sure that is true but I don't have a domain registered with HG so I can't check. The registrars I use have an option in the domain management to set up the domains to use as nameservers. It is called hosts in GoDaddy. If you log into your domain management you can look for an option. If you can't find it the HG support should be able to help.

It depends on who you have the domain registered through, and what kind of options they offer. The company I now use to register domains, charges an extra $20 to have more features, like creating your own private name servers. I registered my main domain through Host Gator about 4 years ago, and I've simply haven't cared about transferring it. Host Gator doesn't give you those options.

If you have your domain registered thru us but not thru the enom reseller account you would not be able to update your private name servers. If you do have the enom account you can log into it and update that info.

Otherwise, send a ticket to sales and we can get you fixed up.
