DNS Management Question

Is it required to point a hosted domain to HG's nameservers? I would prefer to manage my DNS externally through my own interface on another provider.

No, You don't have to use HGs nameservers. You can control your DNS via a different provider

It is certainly possible to use external DNS services but you will not be able to automatically set up subdomains or add-on domains using cPanel. You would have to be sure to add the appropriate information in the DNS Zone manually.
