Default Django Support

First off, let me say that I am extremely pleased with my HG service thusfar. You are the only host I've had thusfar that hasn't treated me like crap or had terrible issues with downtime (Dreamhost, I'm looking at you). However, my suggestion is that you add Django support. While in theory, it is *possible* to install Django on HG, it's brutally slow without FastCGI support and it's also pretty tedious to setup. Django is the best framework I've ever used and I'm getting ready to deploy a large project using it and I really would like to host it with HG. If that isn't enough to sell you guys on giving it a try, competitors are starting to support Django on their higher-end setups, like at MediaTemple and SliceHost etc. If you guys support RoR, deploying frameworks clearly isn't a problem for you, and believe me, Django is far superior to RoR and people want Django support. Thank you so much for help and great service thusfar guys! I look forward to your response.

These are peer support forums. The staff will sometimes reply when they have the time to browse the forums.

HG does provide low cost hosting and does a good job with what they offer. The bottom line is that it is impossible to offer everything at the prices they charge. From what I have seen in the forums supporting RoR has been a real headache at times. I know some other budget hosts that dropped RoR due to problems in a shared environment. If you are looking at a large project it might be worth determining how you might get a dedicated server which you would then be able to install Django and compile using FastCGI, etc.

I'd also make sure to email sales (sales [at] hostgator [dot] com) with the request. The more public requests for it they get, the more likely they are to add it.

This would be a good use for the $75 unadvertised unmanaged dedis that HG occasionally has. They come ready to use and you can change things however you want. They get snapped up very quickly, but GatorWesley posted yesterday that a few were available. If you're interested, email sales at the address in slapshotw's post.

I will discuss Django support with Dave and see if we can implement it in an efficient manner. We already do everything we can to mitigate server loads so we're very careful with anything new. It will require some testing and probably if we were to implement it we would not be able to look at doing it until php5/sql5 and apache2 migrations are complete (another month or so).

Was Apache2 in the next month always part of the plan?
