Default DiskSync backup solution

We are proud to have announced working out a deal with ThePlanet DC to have disksync put on every reseller and shared server.

Here is a little information about it....

"The Planet's new DiskSync™ backup technology virtually eliminates the need for manual intervention that comes with traditional tape backup systems, including physically labeling, boxing, shipping (and/or rotating) and tracking tape media.

Disruptions, often minor, can occur on a day-to-day basis. They can be isolated hardware and systems failures that impact scores of users, or they may be planned outages or system maintenance upgrades. Periodically, larger-scale disruptions can occur. Only DiskSync™ delivers completely automated and continuous backup and recovery solutions, giving you data protection and peace of mind.

DiskSync™'s data protection solutions provide:

Centrally Managed Backups — Easily configurable from a remote networked computer to manage system-wide backups

Fast Restores — Lost or corrupted files are restored in minutes (not hours) 24 hours a day

Server Space Management — Infrequently accessed data can be migrated to the Vault to free up server disk space

Benefits of DiskSync™

By leveraging existing infrastructure and DiskSync™'s innovative storage, data scanning, and data transport technologies, data protection becomes:

Faster — By implementing a disk-to-disk solution your backup time is significantly reduced. Each backup records only new files and portions of existing files that have changed since the last backup, significantly cutting backup time.

Cost-effective — Tape backup equipment (libraries, media, etc.) and management for each office can be costly. Disk-to-disk technology leverages existing infrastructure and eliminates tape equipment, centralizing and optimizing management.

Efficient — DiskSync™ compression and storage pooling capabilities enable a higher number of retentions (number of backup copies/generations stored for a specified timeframe) while requiring less disk space.

Convenient — Manage all backup operations for local and remote servers from one centralized windows desktop. Schedule desired backups with ease, eliminating the need for tape labeling and indexing.

In a nutshell, DiskSync™ helps you:

Manage and reduce the organizational risk associated with data retention
Establish or reinforce corporate policies concerning data protection
Search and discover information quickly and reliably
Reduce your corporate and IT risks and responsibilities
Concentrate on your core business, not data protection "

Are old backup system has been taken off-line and is being replaced by The Planet's new DiskSync™ backup solution. (no backups will be made for the next few days until this has been completed)

Problems with the old....
Load on the servers would go to 20+ while it was tarring up files to be backed up this would cause services to be very unstable and crash.
The entire server would have to be backed up every time backups ran which could take days to complete. This backup system was very unreliable.

Thumbs up Re: DiskSync backup solution

*Thumbs-Up*

I was wondering... I have no idea of what this would involve but have you guys given thought to maybe having your servers at a datacenter within say driving range of where you or a trusted tech/admin live?

I know it's Florida, hurricanes and all, but your having physical access to the hardware would probably make a ton of difference in the more difficult situations.

As I said, just wondering.

Good to hear new measures in place to prevent the daunting period that you people had to go through in the beginning of the year!

Good luck people!

Well this sure doesnt work!

I spent 36 hours trying to get tech support to restore a backup of a client's site. This was on April 8th. But strangely enough the LATEST backup that could be restored was from March 27th.

I don't know why HG doesn't use an incremental BU solution and use the network drive storage space provided by The Planet. On our dedicated servers, (also leased from The Planet), we use incremental backups, (which take a lot less physical space AND CPU power), and can restore a client's site back to any point in time if necessary and with good reason.

IMHO, backups are still a problem on HG - though a LOT better than their calling RAID a backup...chuckle. And folks, you would be VERY surprised how many people who resell hosting space do NOT do backups even if they say they do. Even those that do mostly do them to a backup drive on the same server, which is a bit risky for any mission critical applications.

Peace

Wolf

I really hope that still isn't the case AlphaWolf since I recently accidently deleted someone's site using WHM Autopilot.... I chose the delete account option instead of Delete Account on WHMAP because I forgot there were two and rushed... so now one of my client's sites has disappeared, completely my fault but I hope it can be restored as soon as possible.

I know that messing about with backups can take time and you do a great job hostgator, we have never had any downtime longer than an hour with you as far as I can remember whereas with our old provider we were stuck on a server which was virtually always down and kept being fobbed off with false promises.

So does this new disksync thingy allow you to restore backups straight away or is it going to take hours? From now on I am going to backup clients sites daily..

Actually, if HG is doing all their backups to DiskSync, you may be in luck!

We do our backups, (I have 5 servers not from HG), to a NAS drive incrementally which makes restoring a backup a long process. And takes more SysAdmin time than is reasonable. But we recently started offering our customers DiskSync backup solutions for people who just don't take the time to do backups.

Full server backups are insurance against a server failure or someone managing to hack root access and wipe everything or mess everything up. They really are not a substitute for our customers doing their own backups, or having us schedule account specific DiskSync backups.

peace

Wolf

For reseller Clients is there any cost to the DiskSync solution to our clients?

I'm not sure DiskSync is still the backup solution being used now. There are weekly backups. If you or your clients need a restore there's a fee to pay.

Stef.

I understand the restore costs that were prior stated. Alphawolf said something about client specific backups. What I am asking is how the change impacts resellers in terms of services offered and fees for those services.
