Sorry to have to be blunt about this but I was going to be a returning customer but after finding about the price to install my wildcard SSL certificates I decided to cancel within the first 48 hours cause I thought the total price was disgusting. I couldn't believe how extortionate it was! $100 for 4 domains!? Come on cut me some slack please! I would have stayed if there was some sort of price cut for installing multiple at the same time! Even though it's a one-off fee, Please do something about this cause a lot of people are on a budget and can't afford all that at once!

If you're installing SSL certs, it must be because you're expecting to make money from your sites (why else would you be installing them, if not for some sort of eCommerce?). If $100 is too much to pay, perhaps you should reexamine your business model.

in actual fact i don't make a penny since they are community sites. The reason why i wanted to install SSL is cause of recent security scares in my country also visitors demanded I do something about it. That's why I saved up for wildcard SSL's to make things easier. As the saying goes... "Better to be Safe than Sorry"

Perhaps the community you are supporting can help pay for the increased security they asked for?

that's not possible since most visitors don't have any money and aren't willing to pay at all cause of the security scares since they are afraid their own accounts will get hacked into.

Then guess what... it's up to you to pay. That's life... move on.

You could move to a VPS/Deddi and install them yourself.

I would except for 2 things. 1. They don't offer 4 seperate IP's for vps's and 2. The prices are expensive for a dedi/vps which would break my budget easily. Last edited by raidensnake; 12-11-2010 at 05:40 AM. |

Incorrect, HG does indeed offer 4 IP's if you need that many. Again, you just have to pay accordingly. Things in life aren't always the price we want them to be.... because the buyer doesn't set the price, the seller does.

Ok, lets put it this way. If I don't do anything all of the visitors would start complaining in massive numbers to the hosts and then they'd be on my back. Yes I have had that happen before where I've had several warnings about user complaints in the past. I've been lucky soo far to have them resolved before things got out of hand. They complain cause of the risks as I said earlier... I can't blame them either. I know what it's like to have things compromised through no fault of my own. I'm more than happy to meet thr requests that they are asking me. All I'm asking of some sort of help in some way to make things easier. That's what I meant about discounts.

It is difficult to have much sympathy for your situation since you have not given real details.
Have I got this right... - you volunteer your time and pay all website hosting and development costs out of your own pocket as a service to your community - somehow, this "community" has come to believe that an SSL certificate is necessary for them to be secure while visiting your site - there is no sensitive information being passed to the server |

And SSL isn't going to keep out a dedicated hacker anyway. Look at the recent troubles Mastercard and Visa have had. You can bet they have all the security available and still got hit. |

Also, an SSL cert merely encrypts the data WHILE IT IS BEING TRANSMITTED BETWEEN THE SERVER AND THE USER'S PC. It does NOT protect data stored on the server.
I know that trying to get false information erased from the public's collective thinking is not really possible, but installing an SSL cert isn't going to fix the problem they are fearing. |

So back to the earlier point...
You're doing this as a free community service, so just don't install a cert. To those who complain, request a donation. If they can't afford to give anything or just don't think they should have to contribute, then maybe the site isn't worth as much to them as you seem to think it is. Drop it, and move on to something less frustrating. |

HG provide a hosting service, not a charity hand out. All of us here pay for a service. We get what we pay for. If we are not happy, we move elsewhere. If we can't afford it, we don't get access to that service.

Actually, we do offer a free SSL that is already on the server. It is the shared SSL so it wouldn't match your domain and you would get warnings but if you add an explanation on the page the link is on that they will get this and explain it to them they should be OK with it.
