When i first purchased my dedi it was for web-use only however about a month or two into it and i decided i wanted to run an IRCD. I contacted hostgator directly to make sure this was not against anything in the tos. they assured me the ircd was fine to run on a dedicated server only (which I have). I had the IRCD running for quite a while until they killed the PID without my knowledge and sent me this:
Our upstream provider has informed us of an ircd running on your dedicated server. They have informed us that this must be shut down at this time. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you. Thank you for choosing HostGator and have a wonderful day! -- Jeremy M. Level II Network Security / Linux Systems Admin HostGator Support http://hostgator.com https://tickets.hostgator.com - Client Ticket System Lets just say i was a bit confused so i responded: No problem in shutting it down, however I would like to know the reason for the shutdown. I talked with many HostGator techs and all of them assured me an IRCD is not against TOS as long as it is on a dedicated server which it is. Please let me know the reasoning behind the decision to shut down the IRCD. In which he gave me a beat around the bush answer of: Hello, The datacenter has the right to tell us that you are not allowed to run IRC Software on the server and it was brought to their attention for some reason. Unfortunately they set the rules and they send us the complaints regarding it. If there are any further questions please let us know. Thank you for choosing HostGator and have a wonderful day! -- Jeremy M. Level II Network Security / Linux Systems Admin HostGator Support http://hostgator.com https://tickets.hostgator.com - Client Ticket System I will be shutting it down but keep in mind for the future you may not want to tell your customers that it is "ok" and "not against TOS" to run an ircd on a dedicated server BEFORE and AFTER they purchase. I'm not all too happy about this outcome. I will expect some type of compensation. Furthermore: the ircd has now been stopped. If you cannot keep a promise do not make them. If ircds are sometimes allowed and somtimes not allowed just say NO THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED. I would like a resolution to this issue. I'm keeping the server because i still need it for http. However I would like to be compensated or allowed to run my ircd. Last edited by GatorDHanna; 01-19-2009 at 02:02 PM. Reason: Marking as resolved per customer's request. |

I would also like to point out that my IRCD had nothing to do with hacking/warez/pirating/etc. It was nothing but a chat-chan for PHP/MySQL support and computer talk/info. What gives hostgator?
I understand the TOS can change and I already said that rules are rules and the IRCD is currently off. However this is not a resolution i want something for you guys shutting me off without any notice at all! You went about it the wrong way. |

I just received this in my ticket system:
Hello, First of all, IRCD's are permitted on dedicated servers. They are not permitted to be connected to public irc networks. They can be used for personal use and private support networks. As far as the refunds are concerned, at this time there are no refunds for dedicated servers. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you. Thank you for choosing HostGator and have a wonderful day! -- Jeremy M. Level II Network Security / Linux Systems Admin HostGator Support Hello, I do apologize for it not being in the TOS, I have spoken with my supervisor and he is going to look into why it is not listed in our current TOS. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you. Thank you for choosing HostGator and have a wonderful day! -- Jeremy M. Level II Network Security / Linux Systems Admin HostGator Support Oh you guys forgot to put it in your TOS so a sorry should do it? common! What up with the smart-allick way he says "first of all" as if I did something wrong. IT WASN'T IN THE TOS WHY AM I BEING LOOKED AT AS IF I AM THE BAD GUY!!!!!!! |

Hi there,
I apologize for the confusion and the inconvenience. As Jeremy pointed out in his response to you, IRCD's are indeed allowed on dedicated servers, but there are certain situations and instances where their use is not permitted and it looks like you encountered such a situation. Unfortunately, there is no way our Terms of Service can comprehensively list everything you can or cannot do on a server, but with that in mind, I do understand your point of view and your frustration over what seems like a miscommunication about IRCD being allowed (yes) and then also being allowed to connect to a public IRC network (no). I've sent an email to your primary email on file so we can discuss this further.
