Default Difference between Reseller and Dedicated Hosting?

Hey there,

I'm considering moving my 70 clients (in my cPanel/WHM reseller account) to HostGator from a very bad web host (WestHost.com). I was wondering - would you recommend a dedicated server for my clients or should I choose the Diamond Reseller one? I see that both offer cPanel/WHM which is what I want. I'm not some network admin guy - just a web designer that likes to edit my websites in SSH using the vi text editor (love having root access via SSH). What makes the Dedicated plans more expensive than the Reseller plans?

Thanks in advance!
-Wes

With Dedicated hosting you have an entire server. With reseller hosting you are sharing a server with lots of other resellers.

There is an intermediate level called VPS where you get a virtual server to yourself and share the real server with a handful of other VPS accounts.

Hello,

Depending upon the load your sites handle, either solution could be useful. One thing you may want to consider is the root access issue. On a reseller account, we can offer free jailed shell access to the main reseller account, and access to each individual reseller client's account for $10 per account, a one-time fee. This would allow you to edit websites under each cPanel user's account, but would not allow for full root access to the server.

Aside from those fees being waived as a dedicated server holder (as you would be able to manage this though the WHM) and you getting full root access, you would get unlimited cPanel transfers for the first 30 days of your account, where with a reseller account, you would get only 30 transfers. We also still manage the dedicated servers, which means we'll assist you in your new role as server administrator, helping you just as if you had a shared or reseller account.

Though the VPS is a less-expensive solution at the lower-level, those accounts are not really meant for high-traffic sites, and I wouldn't really suggest them for a reseller with 70 clients.

Here's a link that spells out the free content transfers policy:

and here is a primer on moving to us as a new host:

Thank you for considering us as your hosting solution - we look forward to working with you.

If you planning to start your own hosting company then better start with reseller instead of directly jumping with dedicated servers.

Did you even read the original post? He says he already has 70 customers, I'm pretty sure he's already beyond the "planning on starting a hosting company" phase.

For 70 clients yes I would recommend a dedicated server.

Dedicated Hosting is a true independence compared to reseller plan.
I would personally go with dedicated server...

Thumbs up Re: Difference between Reseller and Dedicated Hosting?

In fact,i know they are two kind of hosting, if the bandwidth i need is so big that i have two kind of choices. When choosing between the two,its important to keep yourself aware of the requirements of your website. The amount of security, freedom and budget are also soem of the essentials when choosing a package.
A dedicated sever would be an ideal choice if you wish to be the sole user of the server with dedicated resources and complete control over the server. With it you get complete root level access to the server. You are free to use the server as per your requirements.Bear in mind that dedicated servers are costlier than reseller packages. On the other hand,if your only intention is to have more server resources than the shared package then, reseller hosting package would be just the choice.
