Hi again,
Sorry about all the questions - I'm just trying to find the right thing for my needs. I've noticed talk about these Dedikiddy servers at $75 / month. I emailed sales, but they just referred me here: http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml Are they still available somewhere? Ever hopeful, kamm... |

The $75 per month is for an unmanaged dedicated. If you go to the HG main page and click on the Order Now link at the top of the page then you will have an option to choose your plan in the order process and it is listed there. They are not always available but several folks lately have gotten one (including me) and discuss them in the Dedicated Support section of the forums.

The "DediKiddy(tm)" is what some of us call the $75 unmanaged dedicated server, a nickname with which HG sales may be totally unfamiliar.
Sometimes HG has them available, sometimes it doesn't. On the order page, there may be a pull-down option for it.

Looks like they don't have any at the moment then.
Pity, I thought that might be a good starter for me. What's the basic spec on the one's you guys have got? kamm... |

Mine is a P4 2.00 GHz with 1 gig RAM and 2 80 gig HD's (I had the second one added for a one time charge.)
It's a pretty good deal if you are pretty well acquainted with WHM. |

Yes, that sounds just right for me.
I've asked them to notify me if one becomes available. Thanks for your help, kamm... |

Remember that "Dedikiddy" is the jokey name we all use here in the forum (thanks to Gwyneth) and not all salespeople might know the term.
Also, are you clear about what "unmanaged" means?

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies... Yes I do understand that unmanaged means - you're on your own, but I figure sooner or later I've got to make the move to dedicated. I only host web sites that I've built myself, so I know I don't need anything much more than a recent version of PHP tweaked to my satisfaction. I'm also guessing there's quite a bit of peer support here on dedicated forum, but I guess because I'm not officially a Hostgator customer yet I'm not able to view it. Anyway sales emailed me this: Quote:
Cheers, kamm... |

Sorry guys, we sold out of these servers about a week and a half ago. We may be offering it again some time in the future, but as of now we have removed it from our order wizard.

Can we sign up to be notified if/when they ever come back again? Also, will there be an option to have them set up as Windows boxes? I'd get one for sure if I could get a Windows "DediKiddy" next time...

Since we do not have any immediate plans to bring them back, just keep an eye here on the forums for any future possible announcements about them.

best bet would be to ask live chat and get it now if they do instead of waiting for an offical reply since they might be sold out by then.

I can't say for sure I need one right now. I may have someone moving from another host and they would like to look into the unmanaged... the only problem is that I can't say, "they don't have anymore, we have to wait and see if they get more, if ever"...
I know the unmanaged aren't advertised, but I think it's' somewhat a poor business model for these server specifically. Oh well, was just curious. When the times comes, I may just have to get them a managed server.

About 3 days ago live chat told me that they were available but would not be listed, I was told to create a support ticket to a specific person and they sent me all the details.

It's an odd pocket of the hosting business, though IMO it's going to get much bigger. But I'd guess that without a steady supply, there's not a steady demand, and without a steady demand, there's not a steady supply. If you're a reseller, you might benefit from getting one for yourself. Then, if and when that client wants a dedi, you can manage it for them and pocket the difference. Or, move your reseller clients to it...it will be faster, more secure, and you will learn a lot.

I went with a reseller initially since I don't really have the time to manage a server. I know what needs to be done to do this, so I'd rather not, at the moment anyway. The client I was referring to has *nix heads that run webservers at their office, but are looking to have the servers outsourced so they can downgrade their network size/bandwidth/etc...
I don't have but a couple handfuls of clients on my reseller, definitely not even enough to break even on the unmanaged. If I were to ever go to a dedi myself, I'd go with a managed server. Thanks for the info though.
