Default Dedicated Server Updates

Ok, I know you guys are fast at picking this up. So this time I figured I'd tell you all first about the upgrades/updates before you found them!

Currently if you view http://hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml you will notice a few changes.

First, for any new order on a BASIC or STANDARD server starting today you will receive 2 months free on the BASIC server and 3 months free on the STANDARD server. This means after your first payment (with no setup fee!) you will not have another payment until the 2 or 3 month extension is over. If you sign up for a standard dedicated today, you would not have to pay again until September 4th.

Please note that this is applicable to new servers only, and will also apply to customers with current accounts that order a new server.

* This offer expires on 5/10/07

Second, our PRO server now comes with a choice of two configurations at sign up. Once again this only applies to new servers, or servers that have not yet been set up yet. Your two options are;

A) 4 gigs of RAM and 4x500GIG Hard Drives
B) 8 gigs of RAM and 4x250GIG Hard Drives

At signup you can choose which setup you want in the server details. If you specify neither, you will be given choice A by default.

I believe this is really a great chance for any of you who are on the border about getting a Dedicated and should give you plenty of time to get going. Or if you already have a dedicated with us, you may want to look into moving to one of our powerhouse PRO's. They'll likely last you a long time.

Hope you all enjoy the new setups, please feel free to comment or ask any questions here.

We too just went dedicated and think we deserve free time too

Actually, thanks for the announcement, but we are OK with the deal we made at signup. But if we add a second server can we get 6 months free LOL!?!

It's a nice deal for people to get their hand onto the server without paying for a few months to know how it works.

Make sure you make up a plan to be able to pay for the server in september. It gives enough time for users to go out in their local area and try to get clients on that server so it pays for itself in september. If you're fast enough, you will end up making money sooner since you will have the 3 months free!

Their is multiple way to get clients so start your plan right away and I wish you luck to get clients on your server so it pays itself after 3 month and that you do make money also!

I've been on dedi for over a year and was trying to do everything myself but the best way is to send a support request to Hostgator and they take care of it. This way, you make sure to not do bad command(like I did last week) or delete or click something you shouldn't touch. Asking on the forums here also help to get answers.

I like the offer on the PRO but I am still far from that plan at this time since I am only around 92 clients in total.

This deal for dedi server will surely help users to take the dive from reseller to Dedicated Server.

Best Regards,

Wow! I guess even though my website is pretty new, I'm getting fairly good revenue with my site through ads, and this offer can help my site grow EVEN MORE!

I'm not really having clients or anything, but my site I knew may grow out of shared sometime because of the amount of subdomains/sub-sites it uses.

One quick question: is it possible to downgrade back to shared after this offer is over (in september)? (I'm pretty sure I can, I can just let the server expire, then I'll just drop the files and SQL back over)

EDIT: Also, do I have to use a coupon code or not (i didn't see one)

EDIT2: Do i just use my current domain name and click "Add this order to my account"?

EDIT3: Is it ok if i request to start fresh don't transfer anything? Like I'll manually get all the files, mail, and sql then upload em by hand.

You can 't downgrade, but I'm sure you can cancel and transfer the files to a new shared account later. However, this is a really bad idea as it will take a ton of work to switch and you get nothing out of it. This would also be a huge pain in the butt for HG. Don't be a dick.

No coupon code.

You can use your current domain, but remember that if you current domain is pointed to your shared account, you will not be able to see the dedicated box. You'll need to make the domain changes to get it to work.

The copy of your domain is not automatic, it needs to be requested.

Well I'm saying.. I'm using this as an opportunity to see if my site uses all the resources for a dedicated. I'm sure it'll use some (because I run shoutcast, and such) but I'm not too sure if the price is worth the power. And I'll be fine switching, because I'm basically using the dedicated as a powerful shared account (with some other services I normally run on my own PC)

I can tell you from experience that there is little that is the same on a shared account when compared to a dedicated. Dedicated is 1000x better in all aspects.

However, its difficult and time consuming to properly configure a dedicated and taking it for a three month test drive is a TOTAL waste of time if you don't plan to keep it. Of course, if you don't like it, you shouldn't keep it, but I think that its a bit much to abuse HG by taking them up on their offer and then planning to drop it when the free time is over. That makes you basically going out of your way to steal $600 from HG, IMO.

Of course, if they couldn't handle a little abuse, they wouldn't make the offer.

Hi,
just a couple of nit picks.

1.) is that right, half as much ram for twice as much space?
That seems backwards to me.
Why have only 4 gig of ram trying to push 2 TB of space?

2 I was looking at your new prices on the website and noticed a few querks and here is my favorite. I want 10 please!

I know but i just love keeping you on your toes.

No, it's always been way more expensive. You're paying for a much bigger piece of the processor and resource pie than you are with shared.

No.. you can host more than one domain on the shared package but each domain don't get its own cPanel

The semi-dedicated plans are sold at their actual cost. Oddly, you are paying for almost exactly what it would cost if you purchased a dedicated server and split it up 4 ways.

Its a very good deal, as its not a shared solution. The next best thing would be an undersized unmanaged dedicated, which would be about twice as much.

It seems odd to me becuase a 200gig shared plan is almost all of 1 HD, even if it's a 500gig HD it's over a third of the space.
So how can a small 25gig shared plan be better unless it's hosted on a 80 gig HD with no other HD's in the box?
The Diamond reseller account is 50gigs and it's hosted on a 2TB box split up into 4 500gig HD's. And the proccecers are reading 4x 3.2 Xeons. (2 Dual-Core Xeons) Basicaly 1 core per 500gig HD.
Do you see where i'm going with this?
Don't get me wrong i'm not bashing or anything, just nit picking like alot of us HG veterans like to do to kill time.
I personaly build all my home and studio pc's, with the exception of the Boxx Apexx 8's, and i know quite a bit about servers meaning hardware and how it works. The 4 and 8 gigs of ram is way off meaning backwards.
I know what there thinking but ram doesn't work like that.
Also the new pro servers say that they only come with a single core2 duo instead of dual xeons for 2TB of activity. That's way off.
If you take a look at the benchmark tests from intel the conroe has only a 10% increase in speed compared to the xeon. Now add that togetther with the for mention specs and tell me that the math doesn't add up.
1 dual core conroe against 2 dual core xeons is no contest, the 2 xeons will eat the 1 conroe alive.

Just my thoughts, whats yours?

The semi dedicated people are much more likely to be using up all their resources than resellers or shared users. Also, it's much easier to drop in a new harddrive than it is to drop in a new processor. That's why the semi-ded people are paying extra for a bigger piece of that processing power.

If that's the case then the 25 gigs must be hosted with only a couple of other people on a small HD. I'm curios as to which proccesor there useing.

Please let me know your ticket number so I can make sure that it was looked at by a sales rep and not someone from support. Likely they are right, but I can take a look at your account and see if there is anything we can do.

I've found Hostgator to be very fair about helping out in cases like this. Of course, you could always order another server...

The semi-dedicated plan will be updated this year, I'm fairly sure of it. The problem is that with server, the processor often runs out of power long before the hard drive is full. That is reflected in the semi-dedicated server, where you are buying 1/4 of the processor on a smaller server. The hard drive space is really irreverent, because the average site is less than 1 gig in size.

The semi is really a place for users who need more processor, but not a whole server.
