Hi
We are absed in the UK and are looking to rent a dedicated server from HostGator. Our problem is we are not sure whether to go for the Standard of Elite. With the standard we would have to purchase some Back Up as well. Can someone tell me if the following is correct: 1. If on a standard server the drive goes down, then the server is offline until the drive is replaced and restored. 2. If on an Elite server with 2 x HDU's, then these can be mirrored and if one goes down, then the second goes online, whilst the first is replaced? Is that correct logic. Thanks Alex |

Alex I am also in the uk so hello from sunny london today
![]() I dont think HG backup your drvies for you so if one dirve goes down you loose it! as for the mirrored drives if its raid (which I would assume it is) then yes the 2nd drive would take over while the first is replaced. Why dont you consider having a machine in your home (or a service) that would mirror your drive and ONLY update whats needed. (bassically a linux server using rysnc wouold be cool) I'm planning on doing some kinda of dedicated backup solution for my clients.. So maybe you would like to be give me a pm and we can talk further.. |

Two drives can be mirrored in a RAID, but this must be requested at setup.

OP: RAID is not a backup solution, if you delete a file on disk1 then it will be removed in disk2, If you're going to use a RAID setup, you'd be best to order a backup account to send backups to (like bqbackup). |

If The Planet's datacenter somehow succumbed to major disaster tomorrow, which is highly unlikely of course, I'd still have a way to get back online without an extended service interruption.

i would second the suggestion for offsite backup. it's not expensive for the extra level of protection you get.

Offsite backup is probably the ONLY way to go

On my home Mac system, both the notebook and desktop are backed up to one of Apple's Time Capsule network drives. The desktop, having more of my critical work stored, is also backed up daily to a secondary internal drive. On occasion, I take a drive to a bank vault. Paranoia is my middle name. Blame my parents for not giving me a regular middle name. ![]()
