Default Dedicated Server Questions

Hello,
Im wanting to get a dedicated server and want to ask some questions before purchase,

1. Does the Windows Server 2003 come with Remote Desktop Connection?
2. Is it possible to install a remote desktop connection service (VNC) on Linux machines?
3. Is it possible to purchase more bandwidth?
4. I will be using my site for just my self is there much configuration needed and if so what?

These are my questions so far,
So thanks!

And does Windows Servers come with MySQL 5?
Or only MSSQL (As in pre-installed)

Im more likely going to go with Windows OS as its the same price as Linux and well is there anything i can lose with getting Windows?

http://www.hostgator.com/windows-ded...-servers.shtml Says MySQL5 in the features list, so it should come with MySQL5.

Some php scripts etc, that require linux wont work.

If you use PHP then you're best on a *nix OS

Really?..
Well that just ruined my day...
Now i have to try and install a VNC application via SSH and i've never used it before..

Do you think it would be possible for a HG Staff member to install a VNC software during the setup process of my server? If i get Linux ofc, Which looks like it might be the only option since you said some PHP scripts wont work and the fact Linux is more stable and the protocols are "Hacker" safe (More hacker safe...).
And the fact im used to Cpanel...

Email sales@HG I'm sure it's possible, but they'll probably charge you.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't VNC an application allowing you to access the GUI in another computer?
In a Linux server there is NO GUI by default. I suppose you could install one by yourself, but you can't expect any support from HG with that.

Yes, if you want to use VNC, you're going to need to install a window manager on your linux box here (like GNOME).

That is a very bad idea.

What are you trying to accomplish? Your GUI for most functions on your cPanel box is cPanel/WHM...

This is kinda annoying im only seeing rants against Windows OS,
Yet that would be the better solution for the VNC..
This is kinda troubling...

Anyway they could install Ubuntu... Seeings its pre-installed with GNOME.

If you give a little more information on exactly what you want to do with the server it would be easier to provide more specific advice. If you want to run ASP scripts, for example, then a Windows server would make more sense.

If you basically want to run the website you have had on a shared account and are using MySQL and/or PHP then a linux server makes more sense. As Slapshotw said cPanel and WHM provide a GUI that allows you to do about anything you would need to do. Combined with the front end programs from ConfigServer you can manage the server pretty easily. I jump back and forth between WHM or SSH depending on what I need to do.

You could say if i got Windows i would run a "Game Server" on it via VNC.
And also be running a file sharing site.

I would look for other folks running sites similar to what you want to run (same game servers, etc) and find out what they use. I'd also check out the cPanel forums under the cPGS section to see what is involved in running a game server on a cPanel server.

Well my "Game Server' is custom made so it wouldn't "with" Cpanel,
It requires a Win32 environment,
And my file sharing competitors have clusters of servers....

he only thing im worried about is the Bandwidth limits,
Is there anyway i can have more on my monthly limit?

You should contact sales and ask about specifics on purchasing bandwidth, etc.

If it needs Win32, a GUI on Linux wouldn't work anyway (VNC or not).

Well my main use for the server would be the file sharing site,
The Game Server would just be a little extra touch.

But if Linux would be the better option for a File Sharing Site (PHP),
The it looks like it must be Linux.

I would definitely use Linux for a file sharing site, where the greater security will likely serve you better (as you'll have people uploading who-knows-what to you).

Yea it looks like Linux is my only option,
As the Game Server is not needed.

Also the guide Serra wrote up about Dedicated Server Setup,
Would any of that (Other Then Config Server Security) be necessary?
As im the only one to use it.

Almost all of them,
Since to me they look like they refer to internal security and configuration for clients.
