I'm planning on moving up to the Dedicated side of things from the reseller plan. But one thing upsets me with the prices.
The only difference, according to http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml, between the basic and pro plan is the processor and an extra HD, yet the prices jump from $174 per month to $374 per month even though it would seem like there would be no extra work per month for HostGator. Since it's only hardware that needs to be set up once couldn't I just purchase the upgrades for my server when I start the plan? I would rather pay a large one time setup fee and get the exact hardware I want rather then pay $200 more a month. Confused,Josh

You have to remember that there's a giant differance between a Celeron and a Xeon proccessor. Besides the fact that Xeon's keep cool. They're much faster and reliable then a Celeron. Besides, the only reason they sell at that price is because they're given a set price from the datacenter. They can't really go any lower then that price.
[Edit] You can get the Standard plan and get an extra 80 gig drive for $15 a month.

I understand that but it doesn't seem right that I couldn't just purchase the server I want and then get the same service from HG that I would get from the Basic plan and pay for just that. $2,400 more a year just for a dual xeon is CRAZY

You don't really need a dual Xeon unless you're going to be handling over like 50 accounts on your server. With 1200 gigs BW you probablly won't be. Actually, shop around. HG has some of the most competitive prices out there. It's hard to actually find a server with more then 600 gigs BW on a 100 mbps line for less then $600 a month in most places. I've seen some places that would charge around 2 grand a month for a setup like that which is just rediculous.

I know, I was just hoping for a good reason for the price difference, besides it's still worth it.

They use The Planet datacenters. It's the price they have and there's not so much HG can do about it.

Do you, or anyone else, know what HG offers for bps on their Dedicated servershttp://forums.hostgator.com/images/icons/icon5.gif

I'm sure they'd install Virtuozoo at an extra charge. Oh wait, did you mean bits per second? If so then it's most likely a 100 mbps line.
