Default Dedicated Server Load

I'm thinking of getting set up with a 'standard' dedicated server account (Linux). I have a big question that needs answering first though...

I need to know what kind of load the server can handle. My business leases custom CMS software, and I need to know how many client accounts I can fit on one server. Assuming I set up each client with their own account through cPanel, and the software produces a load comparable to a phpBB forum with light usage (say 10-20 people on at any given time), how many accounts could I put on the server before the resources (CPU/Memory/Disk) became overloaded and the sites bogged down?

It's hard to give an exact number, but is there a range you can live with? Do you need to know 10 will be OK? 100? 1000?

I'm shooting for around 100. Do you think that would work?

Like I said, the software is not very resource-intensive. However, I also don't want to over-sell and have the server bog down. I'm just looking for an approximate limit so I know about how many servers I'll need to get, or when it would be time to get another, etc.

I think your server would be able to handle 100 of those without an issue. You'll want to build them up slowly though and monitor load as you add each few in, just to make sure.

If it starts slowing down, another gig of RAM would also help.

I think what I'm going to do is try out a reseller plan first, with only a couple of dozen accounts or so, and monitor what kind of load they are running. Once I get any more than that, I'll switch over to the dedicated server and just make sure to keep an eye on things. I can always get a second server if things ever get too busy...

Thanks for the replies all, this really helped me out.

You won't be able to see what loads your sites are putting on a reseller server as you can only see what the total server load etc, will be. You can always move them to dedicated at any time though

The capabilities of your dedicated will be exponentially more than what the reseller can offer, in terms of the processing power and RAM available to you.
