I'm starting a webhosting business for clients who want to put their business online. They pay for my services in designing and running their website. I just give them the budget on how much they would be spending based on their needs and they give me the go signal to setup their website and maintain it.
In this case, I may not need a reseller account but just a regular webhosting account. However, I may need to customize my DNS name to something like ns1.mydomain.com, not as ns1.gatorhost.com Does Gatorhost offer this custom DNS feature? For free or with fee? How much? |

IF you want custom DNS then you need to get a reseller account or dedicated account

You could also just order dedicated IP's.

But what about your terms of service, where it says that if you're selling hosting you need to buy a reseller account?

If HG enforced this rule, many customers would have to move to a reseller account where they pay more and get less (BW and Mb). In turn, HG would be able to make more money and have to provide fewer resources. And THAT should allow them to charge less on all their plans. I moved to a reseller when I had TOS 11 pointed out to me in these forums, and I have no ploblem with the "pay more for less" trade-off of being a reseller. I just wish HG didn't tacitly approve of customers' blatant violation of this TOS, thereby paying less than their fair share, thereby causing me to pay more than I should. |

Guys, GatorDat definitely understood my question.
I also ran thru the TOS and did not miss TOS 11. I am not into reselling web hosting to other people. I am into designing, hosting, and maintaining websites of clients. I am the one (or have a representative) meeting them for their needs and give them a quotation. I give them the option to be hosted as subdomain on my main domain account (i.e. subdomain.bis.ph), or if they need a TLD for their website I include that on their budget. And if they already have an existing domain name, we then send them some information on what to set their DNS to point to. Once approved and designs are chosen, we sign a contract and they send me a downpayment and we do their websites according to their specification. They don't run their websites and databases on their own, we do it for them. I also understand that if I were to sell web hosting to those other than my clients, meaning: reselling webhosting to those who want to manage their websites on their own, I have to have a reseller account. And also, if one of my clients decide to manage their websites on their own and let go of our services, we then recommend a webhosting company or let them to chose a webhosting company they want and we offer our free service in moving their files into that webhost. And if they want to retain the subdomain that we are giving them, we charge them the use for the suddomain name including the web forwarding to their new host. Did I mention that I am reselling webhosting?
As I said: I'm starting a webhosting business for clients who want to put their business online. I am not into selling webhosting. I am into designing, hosting and maintaining my clients websites. My services are designing websites, hosting them under my account, and ensure that my clients' website runs smoothly with minimal downtime as possible. They pay for my services for design and maintenance of their website, which I manage on a webhosting account like Gatorhost. They want to have internet presence for their business without maintaining an in house team of IT people. They acquire my service to put their business online. They give me the choice on which webhosting company I will be putting their site up. I do not resell webhosting services, but [BOLD] design their website, host their website, and maintain their website [/BOLD] I don't know why you sound sarcastic with your metaphor for the DUI. Do I offend you or something? If I do, please forgive me. I'm like a taxi driver. My passengers pay for my services to take them to their destination. They rely on my knowledge on which route to take, and let me decide what road to take, which street to turn. And in the end, they reach their destination and pay their fares. PS. And it does qualify for a webhosting, but does not qualify as reselling webhosting. Last edited by secure; 09-21-2007 at 07:22 AM. |

And also, I submitted a ticket to Support/Sales regarding this matter. And _SAM_ was right: I should have a reseller account in order to have my DNS customized.

I'm sorry for being sarcastic, but you made several contradictory statements that I actually found amusing
I was trying to point out that you are actually violating the TOS, but doesn't bother me any. I just had a small laugh at your expense which I apologize for

after reading through thread, i vote you should have a reseller's account as you are hosting for profit... even if its just part of your developement business...... but just my opinion.
big benefits of reseller is individual cpanels, (good for organization and management even if customers dont have access), total dns control, and private nameservers....... id strongly consider it. about custom dns...... if you stay on shared, you could get a third party dns service to use... there are many out there, both paid and free. also, if staying on shared, even though you cannot control DNS, you could probably ticket support with specific records you want configured? just brainstorming. ... anyway, for the difference in price the reseller account is the way to go!

Okey, thanks guys. I'll definitely take a shot with a reseller account by the end of the month. I just need to clear some things up on my end.
