Any info on the net about Crons Jobs?
I would like to automate backups of my site.
I am told that there is a way to setup a Crons job to do this.
Any idea on how to set it up or can you direct me to a site with this info.
I have done a few searches but no luck.
Also, what else can a Crons job do?

Thanx...

If you are hosting with Hostgator, backups are taken for you on a weekly and monthly basis. Simply click through the Backup menu in your Cpanel menu and you will see the options. Shouldn't be any need for cron jobs if you are satisfied with weeklies.

Cron is a program that runs on most Unix systems (including Linux). It is simply a job scheduler that allows you run programs at regular intervals. In this way it is similar to the task scheduler (Scheduled Tasks) on most Windows systems.

If you are hosted on Hostgator, you will notice a "Cron Jobs" icon in your Cpanel menu. This allows you set up what it calls "Standard" or "Advanced" cron jobs. There is actually no different between these two except that "Standard" offers you an easier interface whereas "Advanced" allows you enter jobs in the standard crontab file format you would use if you had a shell account.

I recommend using the "Standard" because it is just as powerful and more straight-forward.

You can use this to enter commands and how often you want them to run. Keep in mind that the program will run with your user security permissions, so there will be things you can't do depending on how the underlying server is set up (by Hostgator).

Hope that helps. The best place to learn more is a Linux or Unix manual.

Hmmm... in my cPanel backup menu I don't see anything about weekly or monthly backups. I see the option to generate various types of backup, but nothing about scheduled backups.....

I looked in the documentation and I can see reference to daily, weekly etc backups. I just can't see them in Cpanel itself.

Can anyone from Hostgator comment?
