Default cPanel on Level 1

I am using a Level 1 VPS package ($19.95) to learn about VPS and what it can do. Odd thing is that last night I was digging around in the Parallels Power Panel and there was, under applications, the ability to install cPanel, among other things.

So I did install cPanel. It took forever (> 1hr) and consumed 33% of my space of 10GB. But the install was successful and cPanel and WHM are running perfectly.

So is this a fluke, and I was not supposed to be able to install cPanel? Or is it going to be offered on all VPS package levels?

Would I be better off uninstalling cPanel and installing Webmin instead which has a much smaller footprint? I can get around in Linux using the command line, but it is certainly much easier handling most tasks with a web based control panel.

I'm afraid you can't uninstall cPanel.

Btw, I wonder if there is a license for that cPanel installation, you can check it in SSH command line:
Code:
root@finn4 [~]# /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
Updating cPanel license...Done. Update succeeded.
root@finn4 [~]#

Hello,

As quietFinn said you cant really "Uninstall Cpanel" you will need to reload your VPS to get it completely removed. We do not recommend installing of CPanel on any VPS under Level 3 as we have been dealing with CPanel/WHM for many years now and know how much resources it takes to run the control panel. This is why on our page we do not even offer it unless you have a Level 3 or above for us to install.

If you have any further questions just let us know.

We are on the same river alben but you can navigate easily because you know command lines. Me is wandering through this Linux forest. I also installed cPanel and you are right with the disk space it used, but it allow me to start doing things. It has 45-day license.

Now that I slowly go around Linux, there is one thing I want to do in Linux command line:

Create a user and specify its access level like disk-space, bandwidth, create its own folder in home directory, etc, basic things that we do in WHM. Next is login with with that user and create database.

If I can do these two, I think I can go on with Virtuozzo only without the use of CPanel. PLEASE somebody point me into the right direction, a precise link will be greatly appreciated.

I will Google it and will try it. As of now, I filed a ticket to reset my account to get rid of that bulky cPanel.

That is quite easy to do, I suggest you read the "Parallels Power Panel - Virtuozzo Container Administrator's Guide", "Reinstalling container".
(link to that you find in Power Paneläs front page).

Just notice that if you installed cPanel in Power Panel you must remove that 1st, or you will have cPanel again after reinstall

This time when you 1st remove cPanel in the Power Panel and then reinstall the container it will take just a few seconds

Yeah, I just noticed too to remove cPanel from the applications list. The first go around I did a container reinstall and it too FOREVER (> 1hr). Realized that what happened is that cPanel reinstalled AGAIN.

So removed cPanel from the applications list and then did a container reinstall. Yes, took very little time the second go around (a few minutes). Noticed <100MB of HDD usage. Then did an update of all container software to have a nice, fresh, install.

Went to webmin.com and followed the directions for webmin install. Webmin installed flawlessly So total image size is now around 210MB.

Now I just have to figure out named bind to create a DNS record.

Making progress. I like that...

Got named bind working. Did a Google search for Webmin bind, and up come several sites that explain how to use Webmin for setting up a DNS record.

Yeah, also discovered that cPanel has a 45 day trial license.

Looks like Webmin will work well for these Level 1 - Level 2 VPS's.

I suppose a person could use the domain registrar for DNS or a 3rd party to do it. But hey, I wanted to see if our VPS's would do it. And they do :-)

I used Webmin on a home server before. I actually have it installed on my VPS also. Once You get used to it, it works very well.

Google became my best friend while configuring it!

I am now using Webmin. I filed a ticket to Google before using it, the HG staff who took my ticket, though not officialy, recommend Webmin personally and has a lot of experience with it. He makes it clear though that HG do not offer technical support for it.
