I have been running version 11.28 for a while in all my dedicated servers (+ 1 VPS) and I haven't had any problems with "cPanel spawning excessive processes".

But if there has been such a problem in cPanel, the only way to get rid of it is to update cPanel. If it happens "automagically" or not depends on his update settings.

I can only assume you haven't been following this discussion. The new version of cPanel has been producing a variety of weird misbehaviors, reported by a number of users. We are not imagining any of this.

Updating cPanel is hardly likely to "automagically" cure the problems that have been introduced. There have been several comments by HG people that indicate that HG is customizing cPanel in some way. So, we have no idea whether the problems are in the basic cPanel release, or whether the problems have been introduced in the process of customizing it for use on HG servers.

It's not entirely clear (at least not to me) whether it was, in fact, a cPanel issue, or perhaps a part of "testing a new kernel" on shared servers as part of HG's IPv6 effort. With both things happening more or less simultaneously, it's difficult to assign any specific issues to one or the other.

If you are running a HostGator dedicated server or a VPS there are no cPanel/WHM customizations made by HostGator.
That is why I stated that the only way to fix any problems in cPanel/WHM is to update it.

For anyone running a HostGator dedicated/VPS this thread can be very confusing, because most of the problems mentioned here simply do not exists in "normal" cPanel installations.

Thanks EearlyOut - I thought (even though English is not my first language) that "this" was obviously what was discussed in the latest entries in this thread - the spawning process.

After the automatic upgrade to 11.28.64 Cpanel works very slowly and especially Webmail is much, much slower. I'm on a VPS so I really don't understand the true essence of the problem, but figures it might also have to do with what you are describing regarding spawning processes.

There's a quick way to check to see if cPanel is spawning unnecessary processes. From the main cPanel page, click on a few things, like the Error Log, awstats, and so on, and then come back to the cPanel Home page. Now click "View All Processes," on the left, just below the "Processes Running" status bar. You should see only one entry for a cPanel process.

Earlyout - I do not have "Processes Running" and "View All Processes" on my Cpanel - Cpanel Pro 1.0 (RC1) on my VPS - running Cpanel 11.28.64

The "View All Processes" link is only displayed on the shared servers where people are using the custom HG theme.

Thanks Striddy.

Well, I guess what HostGator should do is get into the game, tell what's up and down about this - and when/how the general problems can be solved.

That's what I was afraid of - we're dealing with several different environments, so it's tough to figure out what's going on in each. And maybe on a non-shared server, the user wouldn't care about having a bunch of low-impact cPanel processes, anyway. It probably matters only when you're living under a ceiling for number of processes.
