Smile coupons, unlimited domains, ftp timeouts, time frame

First I would like to say that I am blown away by your site. What impressed me most is that unlike other sites that only post favorable comments (many of which are probably fabricated) I was able to see a history of hostgator.com in the forums, including the most devastating moments such as the server crash of 1/2/2005. I felt the anguish that the company went through, and felt the sincerity of the apologies from the admins.

That leads me to my first question. Always looking for a way to save money as I build my business I know that hostgator.com has coupons all over the place, and you most certainly pay money for each redeemed coupon, but it was YOUR website that sold me, and although I would love to save some money, I want the credit to go (or in this case, stay) in the pockets of those responsible.

Time to pull out the calculator… I’m planning on ordering the Baby plan. Transferring one domain from another host, and registering a second domain that I need to redirect to the first. I know the Baby plan is $9.95 a month with unlimited domains, and by Googling your site, I found mention of a $2 fee per domain, but this appears to do with reseller accounts. I found one page that mentions a $15 yearly registration fee per domain. So, transferring one domain to a Baby plan, registering a second domain to forward to the first. What cost am I looking at initially, monthly and one year from now?

One of the many reasons that I’m leaving my current host is that I edit my web pages in notepad, and use LeapFTP to upload to the server. My current host has a 300 second timeout, which is INCREDIBLY annoying. It appears that hostgator.com gives total control over FTP settings (Baby account doesn’t have anonymous FTP). Am I going to run into this annoyance with the timeout settings?

Finally, I know that hostgator.com sets up new accounts incredibly quick. What time frame am I looking at for getting my site transfered?

Many thanks!

You mean your current provider times out your ftp session after 300 seconds of inactivity? That does seem strange. I've used coreftp to upload stuff to my site and I've only been timed out once when I left ftp up and had lunch...

People report (B**ch) that it takes a few days to move a site to HG. I suspect that you should plan for it to take a week, just to be safe. Once your account is setup, make sure you put in another ticket to have the site moved. Then monitor the progress.

So, make sure you have at least a week left on your old account. Keep in mind that it may take a while for the name servers to switch as well. I suggest you have the accounts moved, then check them, then change the name servers.

You deffinately should not have this problem here, but I'm not quite sure of the exact timeout time. As for $2 fee per domain that'd be Site Studio for resellers. It's $15 a year per domain at the moment. Intitial cost would then be $25 if I'm correct, and every year the $15 for the domain you bought here. And monthly you would only be charged the $10 for your web hosting.

SO, under a baby plan you pay $10 to have you initial webspace and for each additional domain you must pay $25?

Baby plan costs $9.95/month. I don't know what HG charges for domains but there are many (good) places where you can get domains under $10/year. Adding domain(s) to your baby plan account does not cost anything.
