Default A couple of questions :)

Hello all,

I'm currently not happy with my current hosting company. To the point where I'm even considering leaving them after pre-paying them a YEAR's worth of money and it's only been a month. (I'm dumb, I know)

A couple of questions:

1. How REALLY dependable are the servers here? I've looked at the "outages" forums and it's somewhat scary to see all the complaints of "downtime"...

2. I currently have an SMF forum: a) Is there a "quick-install" with Hostgator for SMF? or is it only phpBB? and b) I have NO idea how to transfer all my categories, boards, messages from one host to another host. How does one do that?

Thanks so much for your advice/help.

Well I've been here almost a year, and can't remember any downtime... oh yea, week or two ago they booted the server where I am
Anyway knowing that HG has really big amount of servers it's not strange that some downtimes occur...

If you have an existing SMF foorum you just make a full backup of your account (including the database), restore the files in your HG account, create the database using cPanel, and then import it using phpMyAdmin... you will need to edit your SMF config but shouldn't be a big problem

Hi Finn,

First off...thanks for answering. Appreciate your taking the time.

Okay...since I have NO clue what I'm doing. (this is more a hobby ), maybe you can explain:

"restore the files to my HG account" ...do you mean upload them via Frontpage or something?

"create the database using cpanel"... is this done by installing the SMF forums?

"import it using phpmyadmin" ...hehe no clue here

"edit my SMF config"...again, no clue.

Thanks again for answering!

Instructions you find here: http://www.simplemachines.org/commun...?topic=15252.0

Forgot that "repair_settings.php", then you probably don't have to edit SMF config at all
