Hi:
I have a website and a phpbb forum that has about 30 members online on an average and it uses 200 MB diskspace and 800 min CPU/month Things of importance to me: - Help in migrating my current phpbb board (2.0.11) - CPU-friendliness - Good customer service and reliability - Up to 10 email boxes - Easy stat monitoring service Any comment, particularly regarding migration of phpbb? Thanks, Rawa13 |

Your best bet would be to stay with a host that uses cPanel. Then the move is simple.

If your current site is on a cPanel host the move to an account here should not be too difficult. You can ask to have the site transfered by tech support or make a backup of the entire site and upload it to an account here. Then tech support can try restoring the backup.
I would suggest, however, upgrading your PhpBB 2.0.11 to the latest version. The version you are running has been exploited heavily. |

My current host is aplus.net, which uses a home-grown control panel that, they claim, resembles cPanel. How does this affect the support for migration issue?

Resembles cPanel means nothing for migration. After migrating to Hostgator, if you ever need to leave, go to another cPanel host. It will save you a ton of trouble. You can still be migrated, but it will be a bit more work. HG has been slow to migrate non-cPanel sites, but if you can't migrate it yourself, then HG is your only solution. |

if you keep the domain at existing registra/hoster. then it will be much easier to migrate.
on usually, i will prepare the new hosting. upload all the existing files, and also the database. Thus making this site data exact the same as the old hosting. then change the nameserver to point to hostgator. and wait for propagation. thus, this create minimum downtime.

i would upgrade at your current host to the latest version before migrating. transferring the same version is essential. then, while it's down for the upgrade, you can do the move in one fell swoop. change your dns servers and you're good to go.
be aware that with sizable databases, phpmyadmin may not be a good option, since it can time out with large databases. you can do it in chunks, or use another db util or script if you're doing it manually. if hg moves your database, you will most likely have to add the user/password to access it from your cpanel in the mysql options. anyway, a couple of tips. hope they help!

Are you speaking for HostGator in official capacity? I appreciate all the responses. I am currently upgrading my phpbb version but meanwhile I just want to make sure HG assures me help when I decide to move. Of course, I am willing to do all the hard work but I am not that technical person, so I need help.

This isn't the best channel for communication with HG people. While they are around, if you want assurances, you should contact sales.

I thought HG staff would monitor Pre-Sales questions?

You thought HG staff would monitor pre-sales in a PEER SUPPORT forum. Why would you think that?

lol, no this guy came on earlier and started spamming a load of threads with cheap cigarettes and counter drugs sites - so I posted that and emailed abuse - they then suspended his account and removed his posts.
