Question Considering a move

I'm considering moving to hostgator but have a few questions. I chatted with support a couple of days ago and found out that you are not allowed to have a custom php.ini file. Since that is the case I need to know what the file upload limit is set to, and the memory limit as well. I use moodle and need to have uploads available of upto 8mb for files my students will be downloading and uploading back to me. Additionally when installing the latest version 1.4.4 (1.5 is coming very soon) if the memory limit is below 16 (maybe 8) there is a warning so I need to sure that I can easily install the latest version as well as future upgrades.

I also use Expression Engine to power 3 blogs and would like to know if it will run on your servers without a problem.

What is the policy about quitting part way through a contract? Are refunds available?

I believe my current databases for my sites are over 2mb, will I be able to easily restore them at hostgator?

Thank you for your time.

Other forum members have stated in other posts that they are able to upload very large files by editing the values in the .htaccess file. These members were reseller clients, so if you were considering a regular shared account your results may be different.

I am not sure about Expression Engine, maybe someone else here will know or you can email sales@hostgator.com

There is no contract and Hostgator offers a 30 day money back guarantee. If within 30 days you are unsatisfied, just cancel at http://www.hostgator.com/cancel.php

Your databases should not be a problem. If you are transferring from a CPanel host, you can use the restore utility from CPanel. If not, you can use PHPMyAdmin to restore the databases.

I just heard a report that hostgator will shut down sites that send out more than 10 emails at a time? Is this true. My moodle installation has around 200 students and daily at around 6pm UTC+9 an email digest goes out to every student. Periodically I write a news item and that also gets delivered to every student.

Will this be a problem?

HG's mail policy which covers your question is here:
http://www.hostgator.com/ticket/inde...&root=6&id=133

There has also been much discussion here from clients both pleased and displeased with this policy. Your list of 200 would put you right on the edge, and it has been stated that as long as you "stay below the radar" - don't bog down the server for the other clients on your server, you will be okay.

If your sending script can be made to throttle the send rate, you would be in good shape.

thank you for the info. I guess it's not safe for me to come here. I'll have to look elsewhere.

I do think that limit is a little extreme, but that is hostgators choice. if this changes in the future feel free to send me an email kimcheeking at hotmail.com

If I am not mistaken, the limit can be modified by HostGator. If you contact sales, they may be able to negotiate an acceptable solution. I'm just a customer so I may be mistaken. I know in my case they have always gone out of their way to solve problems.

Jeff,

I may do that, but I really feel 200 is so restrictive that it is almost impossible to run a forum of any kind that offers thread subscription. Imagine if just 1 person write a message on 10 different threads each with 10 posters already subscribed and they do that in one hour. That's 100 messages. That is easily accomplished on a small board.

I bet at times, even this board generates more subscription email than allowed by the TOS.

Really this is the only thing holding me back from coming to gator. I wouldn't want to be an exception, but rather be able to live in the TOS as it is. If the TOS changes, I would probably choose hostgator.

Oh... yeah I forgot to mention that sometimes my blogs generate upwards of 50 emails in hour due to comment notifications going out.

Please use correct gr3mMuR. It's "choose", not choice. This is as bad as those that state something and end it with a question mark. For example, "I think this is really cool?".
