This is completely unacceptable that you take an entire bank of servers off line with no prior notification. Support (live chat) says it will be anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.
You couldn't have pro actively sent out an email to the customers telling them their servers were going to be down for scheduled maintenance? Great that you post it in the forums, but that requires every customer of yours to randomly scan the forums and hope they find the information that pertains to them at the time in which it effects them. How well does that process work? Well, in this case it failed. Hopefully you'll consider a proactive approach in the future. |

This actually is the top feature of our new cPanel theme. We will be posting all scheduled maintenance well in advance inside your control panel in a special announcement section. We do understand the frustration but in this case the downtime is necessary in order to provide you with the latest and most secure versions of our primary software (In this case operating system + apache (webserver)). I apologize for the inconvenience this maintenance caused you.

Could you not email all clients?
Better than getting them to check cpanel. I dont check that either! |

I totally agree with bob here!!
In the new Cpanel theme, HG should consider emailing the users (be carefull not to email the users of a reseller tho) & keep them updated about any upgrades/failures....

Yep, Patrick added in the other thread this would be a feature.

I'm in my cpanel when I need to administrate my account. I don't browse through there looking for updates. While I understand this is something that GH is doing to notify the customer of maintenance, this still isn't a very viable or workable solution.
Several people have chimed in about getting an email notification, which I'd like to second (or 5th) the idea. There has got to be a better way of addressing the situation in a more proactive manner. |

Patrick posted in another thread that ~48 hours notice would be given, and that you may opt to have those notices emailed to you. This will be rolled out in the new HG cPanel theme.

Well it might be easier to email forum members? Though maybe not all HG customers are on the fourm. Just a suggestion.

I don't want an email; I have more than enough already.
Notices in cpanel and these forums are enough for me. If this is the apache/php upgrade, I think they announced it about a year ago - which is pretty good notice. |

Hmm.. just toying with the idea, of 'dropping an email' into the ~/mail/primarydomain.com/*/new/ folder from a remotely included script maybe run via cron, so it doesn't have to email, but it ends up in your mailbox. </geek>

The site I have hosted here is not as critical as sites I currently have hosted elsewhere. However, it would be much more preferable to have email notice so I could respond intelligently to any complaints or questions that I might receive from people trying to access the site. If I were to move my other higher profile sites to Hostgator (which I have considering doing) this would be absolutely critical. I do not have time to access the c-panel on a frequent basis.

I rarely go to my cpanel and, when there, I'm not looking for notifications. Didn't know they even listed them there. So, agree, I need an email which I check several times a day.

Clearly we need multiple ways of being notified that our servers are down... How about some options? For example:
- cpanel - SMS/Text Msg - pager? (do people still use them?) Make the type of notification (scheduled, unscheduled, etc.) and media (e-mail/SMS?etc.) selectable... Simple, yes? S |

Why not link an RSS feed within the custom HG cPanel front end? Probably the easest and best way to keep on top of what is happening.
I also use this boards RSS feeds to keep informed of any HG news and announcements... Ted. |

Another option would be to have an option in cPanel for an administrator to fill in an email address where HostGator can send their notices and information. This is a bit like what I have on some other sites where the hosts can send server information...
