Hi,

I have been experiencing a problem which seems to be related to SMTP authentication

In my email client (Pegasus Mail) I have 3 options for authentication:

1-Do a prior POP3 login (the one I use)
2-Log-in to the SMTP server
3-Login to the SMTP server using POP3 username/password

The only one that seems to work is 1 even so it is erratic many times I get alot of the errors below the messages dont even leave the local computer (this is a local mail delivery error message). I have a few more SMTP options but I am unsure if I should use them they refer to encrypted data stream settings SSL/TLS... my current option is NEVER (use) I have the following options VIA STARTTLS or VIA SSL... woule either of these help?

If it's any help the sender address on the email envelope is NOT the same as my domain lets say I am user@mydomain.com but my envelope (sender address) is user@otherdomain.com, could this be the source of the problem?

It seems as if the only reliable method for sending email is to actually log-in and retreive pop3 email directly before using the SMTP to send.

Thanks for any help u can give!

The error message:
Delivery has failed on the enclosed message for the following
reasons reported either by the mail delivery system on the mail
relay host or by the local TCP/IP transport module:

550-(amd) [81.193.85.139] is currently not permitted to relay through this

Your original mail message follows:

X-PM-Identity: <Default>
From: "=?ISO-8859-1?Q?YYY?=" <yyy@otherdomain.com>
To: xxx@domain.com
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 11:44:28 +0100

Just as an update inc ase any1 else has the same issue: I've been testing it out and notice the server will relay without a problem for domains on the same machine it's rejecting anything outside of that

Justin,

Just to ask u to close this thread. Even though I have yet to receive a ticket number/response from support (I'm guessing my SMTP issues would have something to do with that).

The problem is no longer occuring, I'll put it down to some sort of network anomaly on my end as a common point to all that experienced the problem (or reported it) was the use of the same ISP.

FWIW the method of authorization that works is logging in to the SMTP server. The webhost I was at before required a previous POP3 login.

http://www.hostgator.com/outlook.html

Maybe this will help with future users with auth issues, I say this because the tutorial (non-flash) regarding email client configuration does not go into the authorization methods. This specific SMTP auth configuration has to be accessed within the properties of the account (in outlook) or "SMTP properties" in "Internet Options" within the Pegasus mail client.

Just to close whats the etiquette in using this forum? Is it on a par with the support email address or is it (as I assumed) a 1st line of support for what may be simpler questions?

Thanks!
António.

The support forum should be a users first stop when seeking support. Often times you will find that another user has posted about the same problem and it has already been resolved.

Just to let you know, my capabilities are limited in that I am unable to modify or even see the actual server files, so the support that I am able to offer will be limited in that respect. I will refer users to use the support@hostgator.com eddress when there is a question that I am personally unable to answer.

Cheers!
