Would it be possible to have a dedicated server set up in nearly the same fashion as a resller account? I say nearly because it would be optimal to keep the bandwidth and space of the dedicated server while having the utilities of a reseller account. If this were possible what would be the extra charges? Also, what would be the other differences from a normal reseller account?

If you would like to give an example, please use the Basic dedicated server.

Thank you.

Each dedicated server comes pre-loaded with the latest versions of Cpanel and WHM, so I think that should answer your question. Further details of what all is included can be found here: http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.html

As for differences, the only differences would be that you have 100% control over what you wish to offer, and you have 100% control over the packages sold, whereas the shared reseller machines are constrained by certain limitations. (bandwidth, features, etc)

Hope this helps.

I'm looking for it in WHM but I don't see it: does the billing manager come with it? If not, could one get it on a dedicated server and how much would that cost. Also, what about the merchant account? Are these things only particular to a reseller account?

Dedicated servers come with Cpanel and WHM just like the reseller accounts. You will have access to all the features that the resellers have.

I just have another question about dedicated servers: Would it be possible to run a MUD on the server?

By the way, thank you very much for answering all my questions, this is one of the reasons I want to go with host gator for my hosting needs, because your service is fantastic! 8)

AntiHero, if you are on one of our dedicated servers, you can run whatever the heck you want so long as it is A) legal, and B) conforms to our TOS.

In short, yes.

Quote:
7.) Resource Usage

Users may not initiate the following:

a) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.

b) Run any type of interactive real-time chat applications that require server resources. Remotely-hosted services are fully allowed.

c) Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.

d) Run any software that interfaces with an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network.

e) Run any gaming servers such as counter-strike, half-life, battlefield1492, etc

I think I would end up violating 7.a, 7.b, 7.c, and 7.e
7.a The MUD runs on a continuous loop polling a list of connected sockets, this usually results in over 90% CPU usage for the life of the application.

7.b The MUD is not entirely a chat program but does have aspects of one, and it uses > 90% CPU

7.c I would leave the process running as I slept, so people could still play the MUD

7.e A MUD is a game.

Does this mean I have to look elsewhere for a server?

Although i am not associated with Hostgator and my word might not be 100% authentic, But i think the answer to youe question would be

No, if you have a dedicted server you can do ANYTHING you want, since you own the box (technically) those things don't apply to you since you would not be putting other users on that server at a risk. As the admin of that box you are responsible for all risk

I am pretty sure that hostgator would say the same.

Archer is correct. On a dedicated box, you are the only client, so you may run whatever software/applications you so desire.
