No one has made any attept to solve or answer this problem.
When someone does make an attept to answer it, I will let it be closed. However, support means answering the question, not closing the question with no resolution. Here is the problem: I am having a problem with hotlink protection. When I activate it, none of the images appear on my page. My directory structure is set up like this: /example/example.html /example/images/example.jpg Would I have to have the html and jpgs in the same directory, or is there something I am not understanding about hotlink protection? Thanks |

Your thread was closed because it was believed to have been cross-posted in another forum. In that other forum, you and Gator_Support alluded to the fact that your problem with broken images had been remedied after a brief phone support call, so I assumed that your support thread was no longer necessary.
If my assumptions were incorrect, all you had to do was simply ask me to re-open your thread and I would have been happy to do so. I was going to do just that, but now that you have started this 3rd thread regarding hotlink protection, I will leave the other one closed. Ok, so you are seeing broken images on every page of your site? Is that correct? If you disable hotlink protection, are the images visible again? Please tell me what you have entered in the Extensions to Allow field, URL to Redirect To field, and whether or not you have ticked the Allow Direct Requests box. Thank you. |

I hope I don't step on any toes by offering one of the many possible reasons for this happening.
I use hotlink protection myself, and for most people it will work fine provided that "Allow Direct Requests" IS ticked. Without that you really have to call the images with a script so that the images are never directly requested. However some visitors can't see any of the images, and generally it's because they're behind a strong firewall or some other form of protection, or that they're using an ISP that is behind an unusually strong firewall. The mod_rewrite that directs hotlinks is generated by the referring URI, and some firewalls will block the browser/server from reading the referring URI for security reasons. With no referring URI to generate the redirect, the mod_rewrite will not be able to detect that your URI is valid, and with no valid URI being present, it will assume that the image is being hotlinked even though in some cases it isn't. If it's particularly important that your images are viewable by everyone, i'm afraid hotlink protection has some quite large drawbacks. |
