I'm moving about 50 sites from my old host to gator's servers. Using cgiemail and some had used the reference to cgi-bin and some had used cgi-sys. Both seem to work here. Is there a preference?
The one account that has a secure form would not work as cgi-bin ... but once I changed it to sys it worked fine. What is the difference (on hostgator) and when should I use one over the other? Thanks, Edward |

I realize this is an old topic, but I am going to be sifting through old threads and providing answers where I can.
![]() Functionally, cgi-bin and cgi-sys are the same-- they are simply folders used to store cgi scripts. The main difference between the 2 is that every domain features its own uniquie cgi-bin folder for use with your own cgi scripts. The cgi-sys folder resides at the server root and stores scripts that are used server(system)-wide. You can not add or remove files to the cgi-sys folder, but you can execute scripts that are inside. If you find yourself installing any cgi scripts that ask for your path to the cgi-sys directory, you could either create your own (be sure to CHMOD the directory to 755), or instead use your cgi-bin directory and adjust the necessary paths accordingly. Hope this helps. -Justin |
