As dedi forum denizens have noted before, its name and description are misleading, particularly for newbies who don't understand its purpose. Two or three in the last week alone have assumed that it's for more intensive support rather than dedicated servers.
In one of the threads that mention this, Serra suggested changing its name to "Dedicated Server" instead of "Dedicated Support". The current description doesn't help either: "Dedicated peer support forum. If you are having trouble figuring something out, post in here and let your peers help you out!" Contrast this with the description of the shared hosting forum: "Use this forum for general questions regarding your shared hosting account." The combination is unfortunate when new forum members are looking at the index page and trying to decide where to post their questions. It would be better to call it the Dedicated Server forum, per Serra, and change its description to something like "where you can discuss anything related to operating and administering a dedicated server".

I completely agree. The confusion was that visitors thought people in this forum were *dedicated* to helping them. The new description still implies the same thing-- peers are dedicated to helping, in this forum area.

The worst aspect of the problem is that most people stumbling in by mistake have urgent, critical (but usually pretty basic) questions that would be answered far more quickly in the shared hosting subforum. In some particularly unfortunate cases, getting answers that are correct for dedicated server accounts but incorrect for shared accounts multiplies confusion and lost time. But even when somebody provides the right info, it would be more useful to other people with shared accounts in the correct subforum.

I think a MONTH is long enough to consider this suggestion.

I hope HG realizes that this suggestion is far more for the benefit of new members without dedicated servers than dedi owners. The folks who accidentally wander into the dedicated category usually are in urgent need.

Does this mean, GatorZach, that you are going to make it your personal mission to locate the HG employee who can make this change, present the proposed language suggested above, and camp outside his/her cubicle until the change is affected?
I'd rather not believe the alternative--a cheap, gratuitous Monty Python reference. http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/schild/inq.gif

Well, short answer, no.
No because I will be spending most of my time serving up witty responses to most of my tickets, rather than worrying about board administration. But yes, I will request the change to Management. |

why not just simply change it to InterestedPeersButNotReallySoDedicated Dedicated Support?
or This Forum is Dedicated to Supporting Dedicated Server Subscribers by Peers who May or May Not Be Dedicated or TFDSDSSBPWMOMNBD for short. Last edited by brad; 02-05-2008 at 12:58 PM. |

Yes, artsy bullets; mis-placed upper case; mixed fonts; badly done margins; overstressed points; inconsistent punctuation; dumb charts; nauseating color scheme; stupid clip-art; and MORE!
I am hoping it won't come to this. http://www.netpond.com/images/smilies/pcfite.gif
