Default Chmodding 777 denied?

hi everyone.
Im installing vbulletin right now..

And upon the instll you need to CHMOD to 777.
When I try to set the permissions, it doesn't let me and I get the 500 internal server error.
Anybody out there know what I can do?

Set the permissions to 755 instead. All of the HG servers run suPhp and will not allow permissions set to 777. Generally 755 will work fine since php is running under your username.

The information you posted in the other thread on this topic is all originally from 2003. A lot has changed since then including development of suPHP. I'm sure the staff has read similar arguments but the decision has been made by HG to use suPHP and so 777 permissions will not work with PHP scripts. I have not found it to be a problem with any recent script.

That topic is still discussed in, even though its old its still a fact. The thing is i dont know if i should sign up because the script i am using is verry uncommon and dont want to have issues with it. I am serious about my work thats all i dont want to get screwd over.

What is the script? If it is written correctly there should be no problem. Many hosts run suPHP for security reasons. If you provide the script information someone may be able to tell you more.

There is no reason whatsoever why any PHP application would need permissions of directories to be set 777.
They usually need directories to be writable, but only brain-dead applications assume that a directory is writable only if it's permissions are 777.

That would be quietFinn and GvilleRick.

Always polite to call people by their correct name.
