Default chmod question

Okay.....If I want to write to a folder within a folder, do I need to make sure that both folders are chmod'd 777??

Example: I want to save automatic backups to folder data/backup. I have made sure that folder "backup" has 777 permissions. Do I also have to have folder "data" set with 777 permissions or will a 755 permission work okay?

Hope I explained this well enough. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

You can have a 777 folder in a 755 folder and be able to write to the 777 folder. (because the user can see and exec the files in a 755 folder).

If the folder is under www, then anyone can SEE it too. The backup contains stuff you don't want other people to see, so make sure you put it above the www folder. However, up there, you can ftp or download it.

If you use .htaccess to password protect a folder, you can stick it in there and download it with a password.

Thank you very much serra.

The folder I want to write to is above the www directory so I dont have any problems there.....this is all so I can "possibly" get AutoPilot v3 working correctly....so far I am not having much luck with it......the cron job and the backup arent working so far....plus a number of other things that I cant seem to get right.

But thats all for another story....thanks again for your help

Just make sure you use the 'get' cron job, not the other ones. The cron it gave me was the wrong one... I had to go back and get the 'get' cron. (I was given a PHP cron).

I've turned the cron off while I try to get the rest of it working, but it isn't going well. All of my billing cycles are messed up....

I was given the php cron also which didnt work. I didnt really understand why because the v2 crons were all the php crons.....they just didnt have the security key at the end of em that the v3 has.

I then used the GET cron and it still didnt work. I contacted hostgator and they activated that on the server, but I still couldnt get the cron to work.

So I got the curl cron, and it "seems" to be working. It is atleast showing up in my AP admin that its running every hour, but for some reason, my daily backups are not saving. I am not getting any emails either. So I am pretty much at a loss as to what the problem could be....might be trying to get ahold of Brandee to see what he thinks could be wrong.

<shrugs> Gotta love it
